Buried deep in the vineyards of the Minervois wine region of the Aude, Azille is a lovely little wine village with a long history. Its mellow stone walls and mediaeval buildings baked by generations of hot sun, give it a distinctly Mediterranean air, and the nearby Canal du Midi adds a truly picturesque element to this already lovely location.
The population may only amount to a little over 1,000, but there is plenty of life about Azille. The village has small shops, wine caves, a bar and a good restaurant, but it is the many festivals, craft fairs, art expos, flea markets and ferias that really bring colour and verve to this vibrant little place.
Azille dates back to mediaeval times, and there are plenty of historic buildings to be seen today in the village. The old city walls, the 14th century church, the monastery and various chateaux all call to mind the different periods of Azille's history, and provide a fascinating glimpse into its development. Today, the village is a popular destination for several different nationalities that form a dedicated community, proud of their village and its heritage.
With Azille as a base, there are endless possibilities for getting out and about to explore more of this ever interesting part of France. The Cathar history, which still dominates, offers up numerous castles to see, mysteries to unravel (Rennes les Châteaux), legends (the Holy Grail and the Knights Templar), and beautiful towns (Carcassonne, Béziers). Meanwhile the natural heritage of the Languedoc brings the possibility for visits to the fabulous Mediterranean coast, the Pyrénéan Mountains, the extensive vineyards and the rushing waters of the gorges and rivers that flow from the mountains.
Activities found close to Azille include walking, horse-riding, white water rafting, canyoning, cycling, swimming and canoeing. Those who prefer a less strenuous approach to life will enjoy visits to the vineyards to taste the excellent local wines or a boat trip along the tranquil waters of the Canal du Midi.
Travelling by air from the UK offers up a choice of arrival airports in Carcassonne, Béziers, Perpignan, Montpellier or even Toulouse. Carcassonne and Béziers are the closest, both being served by Ryanair (Béziers is also served by easyJet). Train travel will also bring you to those same cities, should you prefer. Drivers will find the village not too far from the A61 auto route, along the D606.
Although its beauty and location put the village in the highly desirable bracket, property prices in and around Azille are really quite reasonable. The market currently offers a fully renovated village house, complete with three bedrooms for less than 100,000 Euros. Of course, if you are looking for something grander, you can also find luxurious villas or elegant Maisons des Maîtres in the area.
