Leucate – ever changing character and atmosphere
Leucate Plage is one of six distinct areas, which go to make up the town of Leucate. Each area has its own character and atmosphere. Leucate Plage is a popular beach resort, but there is also Leucate village, ancient and charming (see our Leucate Property Guide); the naturist resort for those who prefer to be "au naturel"; the small family resort of La Franqui (see our La Franqui Property Guide); Port Leucate, modern in character, with greater access to amenities such as cinemas, large shops, choice of restaurants (see our Port Leucate Property Guide); and Cap Leucate, with its wild beauty and radar stations.

Leucate Plage's golden sands
As its name suggests, this is a beach resort, and what a beach! Eighteen kilometres of glorious golden sands that stretch into the distance and towards the naturist resort for which Leucate is also famed, make this a very popular spot for tourists, who love to top up their tans on the beach and to cool off in the glorious Med.
|
Cliffs provide shelter
The beach is also sheltered from the Tramontana, which is the strong wind that hits this part of the south of France. And the high cliffs which protect the beach are popular with those who enjoy paragliding too.
|
Leucate and its salt water lakes
The Leucate region is also known for its unusual salt water lakes, or inland seas, known as étangs. These attract all manner of wildlife, and form a wonderful nature reserve where you can see wading birds such as the beautiful pink flamingoes, and also enjoy a spot of exciting windsurfing, the favoured sport in the area. The étangs make a great spot for this, as the big winds that buffet the Aude create exciting conditions without the danger of being blown out to sea, a real hazard on the open coast.
|
Around and about
Leucate Plage is well placed to allow access to many places of interest. From here you can easily reach the lovely mediaeval cities of Carcassonne and Béziers, explore the quaint fishing villages of the coast and the Cathar trail that lies inland. Wine production is big business here, and wine tasting is high on many peoples' agenda when they arrive in Leucate!
|
How to get there
There are plenty of airports near Leucate and Leucate Plage which have direct flights from the UK. These include Montpellier, Carcassonne and Perpignan. Montpellier is served by GB Airways and Ryanair; Carcassonne by Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair and bmibaby. Rail travel is also a good option, as you can take the Eurostar from England to Paris, then change to a TGV and travel in comfort to Montpellier or Toulouse.

Property prices and availability in and around Leucate Plage
Property by the Mediterranean always comes at a price. Leucate Plage is no less expensive than the rest of the Languedoc coast, but it still represents a big saving on the prices asked for similar property further east, into the hallowed boundaries of Provence and the Riviera. Rental incomes in Leucate Plage are usually good, so investing in property here is generally a wise move.
