Ouveillan – a Mediterranean hill village
Ouveillan is a typical Mediterranean hilltop village, rich in history and charm. The village is found basking in the southern sunshine of the Aude department in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Ouveillan, once an agricultural village with an economy and a lifestyle based on the production of wines and olive oils, is now a popular but unspoiled holiday destination with a good range of shops, restaurants and other amenities.
|
Olive groves and vineyards
Set on a small hill amidst the whispering olive groves and prolific vineyards of the Languedoc, Ouveillan fulfils its promise to be a true Mediterranean paradise. The village is as picturesque as its surroundings, with flower bedecked mellow stone houses straggling up the hillside, often so steeply that the streets are no more than a series of ancient stone steps.
|
Pilgrim heritage
With a pilgrim heritage, there is history to be discovered everywhere. Even the schools of Ouveillan were established by the pilgrims who once flocked to the region. There are traces of the old fortifications that once protected the village from its predators, and one can still see the defensive "fort" pattern formed by some of the village houses.
|
Shops, bars and restaurants
The village was once very quiet, with little but the most basic of facilities, but these days, although still unspoiled and oozing historical character, Ouveillan offers a good range of amenities, with shops, schools, health care and services. For relaxation and enjoyment you can also find cafés and bars as well as a few good restaurants.
|
Out and about...
The large seaside town of Narbonne is just twenty minutes away, and this offers all the usual big town facilities as well as a holiday resort that will keep all the family happy, with a great beach and a full programme of sports and entertainment all summer long. Moving inland, the diverse and often wild countryside invites walkers and cyclists to explore its beauty, and also dares lovers of adventure sports such as rafting and climbing to take on the forces of nature. There are many historic and fascinating places to see in the locality, not least of which is the mediaeval city of Carcassonne, with its fairytale cité dominating the skyline.
|
How to get there
You can fly to several airports which will get you quite close to the village. These are Montpellier, Perpignan and Carcassonne, and between them they are served by a good selection of airlines including budget operators Ryanair, easyJet, flybe and bmibaby. The new airport being developed at Béziers will make air travel even easier. You can also take the Eurostar to Paris or Lille, then change to a TGV which will take you all the way to nearby Béziers. Travelling by road you can find the village not far from the A9 auto route, on the D13.

Property prices and availability in and around Ouveillan
Anyone seeking property close to the Mediterranean, but not wishing to pay the high prices associated with the coastal towns here, could do far worse than to consider an inland village such as Ouveillan. Just twenty minutes from the sea, Ouveillan offers great access to the Med in a tranquil and charming setting, with property prices considerably lower than other coastal towns.
