Port Leucate - a salt lake village!
Forget Salt Lake City... but welcome to Port Leucate, a salt lake village! Port Leucate is found in the central south of France, in the Aude (pronounced "Odd"!) department of the Languedoc-Roussillon region. In truth, the permanent population figure of 2,732 actually covers both the old town of Leucate, and the Port resort, on which this article focuses. Of course, it must also be admitted that any population figures for a popular resort such as this are somewhat arbitrary, as the population swells so much in the summer time that it is difficult to pin down an accurate figure.

A true holiday atmosphere
There is a real holiday atmosphere at Port Leucate, so it might not be surprising that in the summer months, the number of visitors definitely exceeds the number of permanent residents. However, the resort is friendly and family-oriented, with plenty of entertainment for everyone, whatever age you may be. Port Leucate is more like a modern version of a Greek fishing village in atmosphere, and is really quite beautiful, especially on balmy summer evenings, when the lights of the Marina shimmer out over the waters of the Étang, and the sound of laughter is carried on the soft summer breeze.

Everything you want!
Port Leucate offers pretty much everything you could want from a holiday resort. There are supermarkets, cinemas, bars, restaurants and local shops too, all of which makes for a relaxing time. Of course, if you do want to leave the resort there are a hundred and one interesting places to visit nearby. Try taking a look at the sometimes outrageous (but never boring) Cap d'Agde, pop west to see the mediaeval city of Carcassonne, follow the Cathar trail to discover (perhaps) the answers to the age old mysteries that inspired the Da Vinci code novel, or just explore the many beautiful beaches, villages and landscapes that this region has to offer.

Great for windsurfing as well as other sports
Port Leucate is renowned among the windsurfing fraternity for being a superb location for the sport... just the right sort of wind, water and weather conditions to make windsurfing the sport of choice. Of course, there are many other sports available locally too, and you will have no difficulty accessing golf, horse-riding, tennis, cycling and many more activities.

How to get there
There are several airports near Port Leucate which have direct flights from the UK. These include Montpellier, Carcassonne, Perpignan and Nîmes. Montpellier is served by easyJet and Ryanair; Carcassonne by Ryanair; Perpignan by Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe; and Nîmes by Ryanair. Rail travel is also a good option, as you can take the Eurostar from England to Paris, then change to a TGV and travel in comfort and with considerable speed to Montpellier or Toulouse.
