Puivert - a village with a lake

The very pretty village of Puivert, which is found in the Aude department of Languedoc-Roussillon in the south of France, is blessed with stunning surroundings which include a well preserved castle and its own lake. The mountains of the Pyrénées rise dramatically around, making the region a paradise for nature lovers and fans of outdoor activities.

Vibrant with useful amenities

Puivert is a small village, but has a vibrant nature in keeping with the Cathar spirit of the area. In the village you can find a bakery, a small general store, a post office, a bar/tabac and a couple of restaurants, which is pretty good going for a village of just under 500 souls! The neighbouring larger village of Chalabre and the gorgeous bastide town of Mirepoix offer further facilities. During the summer, Puivert, in common with many villages in the region, holds atmospheric night markets where you can find local crafts and other specialities.

Visit the Cathar castle and museum

Puivert is famed for its Cathar castle, which is still in a good state of repair. The history of the region is very much bound up with the Cathars, and anyone with an interest in this period will enjoy a visit to Puivert and to the Cathar museum also found in the village. The lake on the edge of the village is an added attraction, perfect for a cooling swim on those long, hot summer days.

Explore the area and enjoy the activities on offer

You can live in this area for many, many years and still never feel that you have explored all the possibilities. The extraordinary geographical features of the environs, such as the mountains and the lakes and the proximity to the Mediterranean coast join forces with the fascinating history, the vibrant culture and the delightful climate to offer an endless schedule of activities to enjoy. Try white water rafting in the stunning gorges of the Aude, pony trekking in the mountains, water sports on Lake Montbel, skiing and snowboarding in winter, beach days out in summer, or walking and cycling along the Canal du Midi.

Visit historic Carcassonne

Places to visit include the beautiful mediaeval town of Mirepoix, with its arcaded centre and perfect bastide layout, home to a fabulous Monday morning market, and Carcassonne, a lively town with a fairytale historic old walled city. The tiny tax haven principality of Andorra is within easy reach of Puivert, and is great for shopping and winter sports. Follow the Cathar trails through the region, visiting the castles and trying to decipher the mystery of Rennes le Château.

How to get there

There are a few airports in the area that are accessible to Puivert, but Carcassonne is the nearest and suits most people with a good schedule of Ryanair flights from airports around the UK. Toulouse is another option. Rail travel is also possible to Toulouse or Carcassonne. Drivers will find Puivert on the D16/D117.

Property prices and availability in and around Puivert

Surprisingly, for an area with so much to offer, prices in the Aude are quite reasonable. Picturesque villages like Puivert are highly sought after, and property tends to sell quickly. Village houses occupy the lower end of the price range, but it is also possible to find properties set in their own large grounds around Puivert.
