Vézénobres - a Mediterranean hill town
Vézénobres is a lovely and typically Mediterranean hill town that is located in the south of France, in the department of the Gard. Technically, the Gard is a department of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, but in its position close to the border with Provence, it has perhaps, more of a Provençal flavour about it. Certainly its landscapes are very Provençal, with aromatic garrigue, a mountainous backdrop and olive trees, vineyards and lavender fields nearby.

All the charm under the sun
The old town is full of mediaeval charm, and benefits too from the glorious weather that this part of France enjoys. Wall to wall sunshine is the order on most days, and the effects of it show not just on the bronzed skin of the locals, but also on the bleached baked stones of the houses, and the fading paint of the shutters that keep out the blaze of heat from the cool interiors in the summer. Vézénobres has narrow ancient streets and pretty old buildings everywhere, and enjoys superb views from its lofty position out over the plain and distant Cevennes Mountains.

Shops and restaurants?
Some of these ancient hill villages have a good number of shops and restaurants, others do not. Fortunately, Vézénobres is one of those that is extremely well equipped, and offers shops, bars, restaurants and other facilities to make life as easy as it is enjoyable. There is even a beauty salon to ensure that you are pampered and always look as beautiful as your surroundings!

Out and about
The town is well placed for accessing the entire south of France, with Languedoc-Roussillon, famed for its grail mysteries and Templar knights, extending to the west, and the gorgeous Provence and sophisticated Riviera to the east. The area is great for sports too, with all manner of different activities available. The Mediterranean Sea is within reach, as are the mountains of the Cevennes, and so you can climb, canyon, raft, water ski, scuba dive or simply soak up the sun.

How to get there
It is easy to get to Vézénobres from the UK, as there are several airports within easy reach. Fly to Nîmes, Montpellier, Marseille or Carcassonne. Nîmes is served by Ryanair; Montpellier by easyJet and Ryanair; Marseille by British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Aer Lingus and bmibaby; and Carcassonne by Ryanair. There is a TGV station at Nîmes and another at Avignon, so you can take the fast train in comfort having changed from Eurostar at Paris or Lille. If you prefer to travel by road, the town can be found from the N106 road.

Property prices and availability in and around Vézénobres
Vézénobres property is cheaper than that in neighbouring Provence, although it is certainly not the cheapest area in France (anywhere this near the Med is likely to be more expensive than a less desirable location). There are some lovely properties on the market as I write, with modern villas jostling shoulders with old character properties. It's a good place to find a house with a pool, as the summers are long and hot and many properties are already equipped with this all important accessory for life in the south of France!

Access:
By air: Fly to Nîmes, Montpellier, Marseille or Carcassonne. By rail: Both Nîmes and Avignon, which are not too far away, have TGV stations. By road: Vézénobres can be found very close to the N106.
Economy:
The economy, once hugely concerned with the silk industry, is now predominantly Provençal, with wine, figs, olives and lavender produced. Tourism is also important.
Interesting fact:
The town stands on the site of an old Roman settlement.
