Alignan du Vent - a round village in the south
The village of Alignan du Vent , which is located in the south of France in the Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon, is a traditional circulade village, constructed to form a defensive circle to bolster the defences against the invasions which were common in this area in the middle ages. This lends it an extra charm and interest, and Alignan du Vent is indeed a perfect place to begin to discover the history and beauty of the Languedoc.
|
Peaceful village with amenities
Although Alignan du Vent is a small village, it is not devoid of amenities, having a handful of shops. You can find a couple of boulangeries, a bar and a café, a hairdresser's, pharmacy and one or two general stores. On top of this, there is a twice weekly market held in the village, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so you can enjoy shopping in the traditional style as well as having convenience shops on your doorstep.
|
A rich history
Besides its circular shape, Alignan du Vent offers several insights into the rich and diverse history of the village and the surrounding area. The village church is lovely, and has interesting architectural features. There is a square tower which stands on a mound in the middle of the village, protected by three enclosures, a remaining feature of the old fortifications. There are wine cooperatives and caves to visit and a multitude of excellent local wines to discover, as wine, you will quickly discover, has huge importance to Alignan du Vent and indeed, to all of the Hérault.
|
Summer swimming
Alignan du Vent has a swimming pool that is open to all in the summer months, and this is a great way to cool off and enjoy the fabulous sunshine that the Hérault enjoys. Many different sporting and cultural activities are offered in the locality, with all the facilities of Pézenas and Béziers being nearby. Try wine tasting, or perhaps you may prefer to be more active. Why not walk, cycle or ride a horse through the vineyards and hills of this ancient and mysterious region of France? If you like a day or two beside the sea then head for the Mediterranean coast just a short drive away, and enjoy a choice of destinations... lively, like Cap d'Agde or peaceful and pretty like the fishing villages on the Etangs.
|

Property prices and availability in and around Alignan du Vent
Property in the Hérault is sometimes pricey compared with, say, property in the less southerly departments of the country, but it is not so expensive that you cannot find a bargain, or a modest village house for a very realistic price.
