Bessan - the real south of France
The village of Bessan, which is found in the Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon, is an authentic and characterful village that offers a taste of the real (and sometimes forgotten in this age of mass tourism) south of France. With the River Hérault flowing lazily past its ancient streets and houses, Bessan is waiting... although it is in no hurry... for you to discover it.
|
Tranquil and sunny
Bessan has a tranquillity born of centuries of existence, and a sure knowledge that people may come and go but the southern sun will always be there to warm its mellow stone buildings. The mainstay of the economy is, as it always has been, wine. The Rosé of Bessan is justly acclaimed. There is nothing better after a long hot day than a peaceful glass of chilled pink, sipped whilst gazing out at the vineyards from whence it sprang. You can buy this wine, amongst other locally produced varieties, at the local Cave Co-Operative in Bessan, or you can push the boat out and enjoy it at one of the village's good little restaurants.
|
Shops and services
Bessan isn't a large village, but it manages to supply most of your needs in terms of goods and services. The much greater resources of Agde are close at hand should you require more. In Bessan itself are banks, cash points, local shops such as butchers' shops and bakeries and a post office. An added bonus is the traditional street market that sets up twice weekly to tempt you with the best of local produce and specialities.
|
Near the Med
Although Bessan lies inland, it is close enough to the Med to make an excellent base for beach days and sea sports. Cap d'Agde, with its lively and sometimes exotic social scene is on the doorstep if you fancy a complete change of pace, and there are many other places of interest nearby too. Carcassonne, with its fairytale cité, or Béziers, with a tragic Cathar story to tell, are both fascinating and well within the scope of a day trip.
|
Sports on offer
Sports lovers will find the area perfectly suited to them. The weather is amongst the best and sunniest in France, and the terrain, with sea, mountains, rivers, lakes and gorges, is wonderfully diverse. It invites you to partake in exciting sports such as canyoning, rock-climbing, mountain biking, swimming, kayaking and many more. There's even golf within reach, so no need for addicts to go without their fix.
|
How to get there
The nearest airports are those of Montpellier, Toulouse, Carcassonne and Perpignan. Montpellier is served by easyJet and Ryanair; Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe; Carcassonne by Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. Rail travel is also possible, as you can take the Eurostar from England to Paris, then change to a TGV and travel with speed and style to Montpellier or Toulouse. By road Bessan is accessed from the A9 auto route, followed by the E80.

Property prices and availability in and around Bessan
Bessan property is likely to be sought after, as is almost anywhere in the south of France, especially in a village as close to the Med as Bessan. However, Bessan is cheaper than the perennially popular Agde, although as Agde is just up the road it is hardly at a disadvantage! The Hérault is still considerably cheaper than Provence and the Riviera.
