Bouzigues - oyster capital of the south
Bouzigues is a fishing town that is situated on the Étang de Thau, the inland sea that lies between the Mediterranean Sea and the main land mass, and which is so rich in oysters and other shellfish that the town has earned the name of the "Oyster capital of the south"! The town has existed in some form as a fishing settlement since the time of the ancient Greeks, and so lays claim to being among the oldest towns in France as well.
|
Pleasant town
Bouzigues is not just about oysters… although they are pretty prevalent here! The town itself is small but very pleasant, with a great climate and a clean, Mediterranean ambience. Most amenities are here, but for anything you may need that isn't available in Bouzigues you only have to travel a short distance to the towns of Béziers and Montpellier, both of which are large and very well equipped.
|
Attractive harbour and shops
Meanwhile, Bouzigues's pretty harbour and wide boulevards with their canopied restaurants and attractive shops, come together to make Bouzigues an altogether enticing proposition. The location is unsurpassed too, as it is beside the Med and also in one of the great wine producing regions of France.
|
A wonderful and unique environment
The Étang de Thau is a fascinating natural world in itself, with not only a wealth of fish and shellfish within its waters, but also some rare and interesting flora and fauna appearing around its shores at different times of year, ensuring that it remains a veritable paradise for nature lovers. The Étang is separated from the sea by a thin strip of land, and thus affords the residents and visitors of Bouzigues a choice of surrounding as well as a uniquely Mediterranean experience. Do both in a day... spend some time enjoying the sights and sounds of the oyster fishermen on the Étang, then pop across to the beaches of the Med to top up your tan.
|
Sports and leisure
Bouzigues may be a small town, but its location means that there will always be plenty to do. The Med beaches and warm seas are ideal for sunbathing and water sports, and the proximity of the major cities of Montpellier and Béziers means that you have access to all their sports and leisure facilities too. Golf fans, don't panic, France is catching onto the popularity of this sport and there is a good golf course quite close to the town at Lamalou les Bains.
|
Out and about
Bouzigues is a great place to base yourself in order to further explore the south of France. Centrally located along the Mediterranean coastline, you can easily access the Catalan regions of Perpignan and north-eastern Spain, the Cathar heartlands of Carcassonne and Béziers, or the mythical and chic Riviera and lavender fields of Provence.
|
How to get there
There are several airports close to Bouzigues which have direct flights from the UK. These include Montpellier, Carcassonne and Perpignan. Montpellier is served by easyJet and Ryanair; Carcassonne by Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. Rail travel is also a good option, as you can take the Eurostar from England to Paris, then change to a TGV and travel in comfort and with haste to Montpellier or Toulouse.

Property prices and availability in and around Bouzigues
Property by the Mediterranean can be expensive, but Bouzigues is still better value than the Riviera... although property here is becoming pricier as the years pass. Luxury villas are very desirable in this area, and such a property in or near Bouzigues should prove to be a sound investment. The holiday rental market is also strong here, so it may be possible to offset some of the initial purchase costs against a rental income earned when you are not using the property yourself.
