Cessenon sur Orb - perfectly pretty
The village of Cessenon sur Orb, which is found basking in the southern sunshine of the lovely Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon, is a perfectly pretty village that comes straight from your dreams. Lying within easy reach of the Med (just less than half an hour), the village also enjoys a dramatic backdrop of mountains, and benefits from the refreshing sound of the rushing waters of the Orb at its feet.

Old stone, characterful and offering all amenities
The village is full of character, with its age old stone-built houses, its 14th century church and 12th century tower. Its pretty streets conjure up the epitome of southern France, and it is hard to imagine a more idyllic place. It is a real, living community though, not just a picture postcard holiday set up. There are schools, health care services, banks, and that all important market held twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. There are also local shops, including bakeries, a butcher's and a baker's, and friendly bars and excellent restaurants, one especially popular eatery being run, perhaps surprisingly, by an English couple!

White water sports a speciality!
The village lies on the River Orb, which is known for its fast flowing waters and is an ideal location for water sports of the more daring variety! Rafting down the rapids, kayaking, hot dogging and hydro speeding are all popular here, and an exhilarating experience is certainly promised! Canoeing, rock-climbing, fishing, cycling, golf and riding are also available in the area. Meanwhile swimming is on offer in the River Orb from the shingle beach in Cessenon itself or close by at Roquebrun, the River Cesse at Bize or the public swimming pool in St Chinian.

Other activities on offer
You don't have to be a dare devil though, as there are plenty of more sedate activities available here. You can walk for miles in beautiful countryside, try a little wine tasting at the local wine producing estates and "caves" (wine cellars and shops), or simply sit around and soak up the sun. The Med is a short drive away, with lovely beaches and warm blue sea for utter relaxation and enjoyment.

This region offers an almost unrivalled choice of things to see and do. There are some fascinating towns and cities to visit, such as Carcassonne, Toulouse, and, of course, Béziers, and it is worth remembering that you are only around an hour's drive from Spain, so you can hop across the border to sample some authentic Catalan culture... and don't miss out on the delicious cuisine!

How to get there
Getting to this part of France from the UK is easy, as the airport near the local town of Béziers has started flights to and from the UK with Ryanair. At the time of writing there are a good number of other airports accessible from Cessenon sur Orb, including Carcassonne, Toulouse, Montpellier and Perpignan. Carcassonne is served by Ryanair; Toulouse is served by British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe; Montpellier by easyJet and Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. There is a train station at Béziers which links to the super fast TGV, so you can travel all the way from England by rail with just a couple of changes. And if you prefer travelling by road, the village can be accessed from the A9 or N9, and is situated on the D14/D136.

Property prices and availability in and around Cessenon sur Orb
The Hérault is popular with foreign buyers, particularly the British and the Dutch, and this has driven house prices up. Cessenon sur Orb and its neighbouring towns and villages still represent good value when compared with the Riviera, however, and the village has at least as much to offer in terms of southern sunshine and charm.
