The village of Gabian, which lies in the Hérault department of Languedoc- Roussillon, is a traditional circulade village, of which there are a few good examples in the area. This one is particularly well conserved and balances historical interest with a deeply attractive lifestyle. The village lies in the beautiful area between the Cèvennes Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, and is filled with the vineyards which form an important and productive part of the largest wine growing region in France.
Gabian is picture perfect. Its traditional design, pretty pastel-coloured houses and its fabulous location all make it a wonderful base for anyone wishing to enjoy all that this diverse region has to offer. The village has a handful of shops, including the necessary boulangerie, so that you can wander down and buy fresh delicious croissants for breakfast every morning... and tuck a baguette under your arm for lunch whilst you are there! Of course, the seemingly endless sunshine of the summer months just adds to the picture...
Night life in Gabian? Well... in a village of 700 souls you can't really expect a nightclub... but there is a bar and it even boasts a very acceptable little restaurant, which has recently changed hands and is now open for both lunch and evening meals. The food served here is simple but delicious, and if you need a little more choice you can always pop along to Pezenas with its much greater selection of eateries and bars, or to Béziers which has everything you might desire. Otherwise, night life in Gabian is very pleasurable and consists of watching the sun go down with a glass of good local wine in your hand, from your own garden.
Active types will find themselves spoiled for choice in the immediate area, as the diverse countryside and the seaside offer all kinds of exciting sporting opportunities. The Med has all the beach and sea activities you can imagine, and then there is a lovely leisure lake, Lac Salagou, where you can swim, sunbathe, sail or windsurf on calm inland waters. Then you can choose to explore the countryside on horseback, by bicycle or on Shank's pony. You can discover the crystal waters of the gorges in a canoe, or simply enjoy driving around this dramatic region, stopping for a wine tasting session or two along the way!
There are a myriad of choices when it comes to deciding how to travel to Gabian. Montpellier is the nearest airport which is served by budget airline Ryanair, British Airways and GB Airways. But you can also easily access the village from Nîmes (Ryanair), Carcassonne (Ryanair), Perpignan (Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe) or Toulouse (British Airways, bmibaby, easyJet, flybe and bmi). Train travel is simple, with the TGV taking you to Toulouse, then a local train service connecting you to Béziers. Drivers will find the village from the D13.
Gabian is situated in a very popular area of France, and house prices have risen considerably in the last ten years. It still compares favourably with the property market further along the coast, however, and it is still possible to net yourself a bargain if you are vigilant and prepared to move quickly.
