The ideal town...
Situated in the south of France in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon and department of Hérault, Hérépian is pretty in the way that you want and expect from an old French town. Its church tower is visible on the skyline as you approach, setting the tone for the soft-coloured stone houses with their red tiled roofs. All around are the vineyards that have been the lifeblood of the place for over 2,000 years, and the lakes and rivers that provide a cool retreat from the hot summer sunshine. Life here goes on as it has for centuries, working to the rhythm of the seasons and refusing to be hurried by modern concerns. If you are seeking peace and a real sense of history, Hérépian could be the ideal spot for you.
|
A town of arts and crafts
Hérépian is classified as a town of arts and crafts. It is historically known as a centre of the silver trade, and this is thought to be the main reason for the development of the town in the 13th century. Although they closed long ago, the locality housed both zinc and silver mines.

The alchemist’s tale…
A man named Zéphirin Bousquet once lived in the village. He began working as blacksmith’s apprentice, and it is said that he would have made a very accomplished blacksmith had he continued with the craft, but Zéphirin wanted to become a founder alchemist. He completed a long apprenticeship, and finally became a ‘saintier’, a founder who would travel from town to town to ply his trade. The rest of his story is told in one of Hérépian’s main attractions, the Museum of the Bell.

The Museum of the Bell
Hérépian is proud of its bell foundry and its bell museum. Both places are worth a visit for anyone who is interested in the town’s history. The museum not only offers the opportunity to see how many different types of bells are made, but also is a real ‘hands on’ experience as visitors can try their skill at bell ringing! The foundry offers a fascinating chance to see the smelting process involved in the manufacture of bells, and gives an insight into the traditions of the town.

A lovely countryside and lots to do…
Lovers of the great outdoors will find plenty to occupy them around Hérépian. Many popular sports and leisure activities are available within easy reach of the town, and its geographical location and Mediterranean climate render it the perfect base for an active life! The Mediterranean Sea is only an hour away, and the historic city of Béziers is reached within 45 minutes.
|
How to get there
Although situated in the heart of the wine producing countryside of the Hérault, Hérépian is easy to access from the UK. International airports at Carcassonne (Ryanair) and Montpellier offer services to and from the UK, and the town’s proximity to these two cities means that both road and rail travel are possible. To travel by rail, take the Eurostar from Waterloo to Lille, then the TGV to Montpellier or Béziers. To travel by car will take around nine hours by Autoroute, but the roads are excellent and the changing scenery wonderful.

Property and prices in and around Hérépian
Property in the Hérault is cheaper than neighbouring Provence, but expect to find prices fairly high due to the increasing popularity of the area. Hérépian is not large, and its position inland in the department renders its property less expensive than in the coastal towns, so if you are seeking a home in the Hérault and have limited funds, this may be a good place to begin your search.
