Lieuran lès Béziers - between mountains and Med
The wine village of Lieuran lès Béziers is found lying peacefully among the vineyards of the Hérault department in Languedoc-Roussillon in the centre south of France, halfway between the mountains of the Cevennes and the Mediterranean Sea. As locations go, it doesn't get much better than this, as you have the best of two amazing natural worlds, yet escape the hustle and bustle of tourism that has overtaken many of the coastal towns.

Stunning landscapes
For all the drama of the mountains and the sophistication of the Med, however, you can't ignore the beauty that is on the doorstep. The landscapes around the village are stunning in themselves, being comprised of the vineyards of the biggest wine producing region in the country.

Château Ribaute
The village boasts a lovely chateau, which provides a centre point of historical interest. The Château Ribaute, which is classified as an historical monument, was built in the 16th and 17th centuries and gives a sense of the rich history of the area.

Shopping and dining
Lieuran lès Béziers is just a village, but it has a good restaurant so if you don't want to take the car and drive any distance you can still treat yourself. Meanwhile there are plenty of shops, supermarkets and restaurants in the vicinity. The city of Béziers is almost next door, and here you will find anything you could possibly need as well as a fascinating history and culture. The gastronomy of the Languedoc is excellent, with duck and pork dishes prevalent, but in this particular part of the region you will also find a plethora of fish and seafood dishes as the Mediterranean is so near. Of course, wine is plentiful and very reasonably priced, with many good wines produced within a few kilometres of the village.

Around the region
The region is known for its role in history, and there is a good deal of mystery here too, with the legends of the Knights Templar and the Cathars all having strong links to the Hérault. The Mediterranean is only minutes away, which offers not only lovely beaches and lively entertainment, but if you travel inland you can find the beautiful Cevennes Mountains, where you can see spectacular scenery and try your hand at exciting adventure sports such as white water rafting and canyoning. There are many more usual sporting facilities close to Lieuran lès Béziers too, with golf at the little spa town of Lamalou les Bains, and plenty of swimming pools and leisure lakes, rivers for canoeing and kayaking, and lovely walking and cycling trails.

How to get there
Getting to this part of France from the UK is really easy, and possibly about to become easier still, as the local town of Béziers is rumoured to be about to offer flights to and from the UK with Ryanair. Other accessible airports include Carcassonne, Toulouse, Montpellier and Perpignan. Carcassonne is currently served by Ryanair; Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe; Montpellier by easyJet and Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. If you prefer the train, there is a train station at Béziers which links to the excellent TGV network, so you can travel all the way from England by rail with just a couple of changes. The nearest major road to Lieuran lès Béziers is the N9, the village actually being situated between the D909 and the D15.

Although the Hérault is considered to be relatively expensive department in the Languedoc, prices are still a lot lower than you will find in nearby Provence.
