Lignan sur Orb - old stones and hot sun
The village of Lignan sur Orb, which can trace its history back one thousand years, is a village of ancient stone houses and hot Mediterranean sunshine. It is located in the Hérault department of the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the south of France, and stands only five minutes from the historic Cathar stronghold city of Béziers, with its tragic past and mystic tales.

The village is not exactly large, but it offers all basic amenities including health services, junior schools and shops. If you require more facilities it is an easy matter to pop into Béziers, as the city is right on the doorstep and easily accessible.

The village itself has a traditional heart, and in keeping with its region it is a colourful and attractive place with a cared for air. It is known as a village chosen as a home by professional people, so if you buy a home here chances are that your neighbours will be doctors, lawyers, pharmacists and teachers. Lignan sur Orb’s top restaurant
If you want to treat yourself or your friends to a special meal, you don't have to travel far. The old chateau that lies on the edge of the town on the banks of the Orb River, is now a luxurious hotel which has one of the best restaurants in the Languedoc... or so it is said! It is certainly worth checking out. The place was once the home of the Bishops of Béziers, so there is some history there too.

Things to do around Lignan sur Orb
The region is one that offers an amazing variety of things to see and do. There are some wonderful old towns to visit such as Carcassonne, Toulouse, and, of course, Béziers, and don't forget that you are only around an hour's drive from Spain, so you can pop across the border to sample some real Catalan culture... and cuisine! The countryside is diverse in this part of the south, so you can choose to enjoy the water sports and sunshine activities of the Mediterranean, or head inland and test your nerve and skill with the adventure sports on offer in the canyons, gorges and mountains.

How to get there
Getting to the region is easy, and possibly about to become easier still, as the local town of Béziers is rumoured to be about to offer flights to and from the UK with Ryanair. Even at the time of writing there are a good number of airports within easy reach of Lignan sur Orb, including Carcassonne, Toulouse, Montpellier and Perpignan. Carcassonne is served by Ryanair; Toulouse by British Airways, bmibaby, easyJet, flybe and bmi; Montpellier by British Airways, GB airways and Ryanair; and finally Perpignan by Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. There is a train station at Béziers which links to a TGV, so you can travel all the way from England by rail with just a couple of simple changes.

Property prices and availability in and around Lignan sur Orb
The Hérault is popular with foreign buyers, particularly the British and the Dutch, and this has driven house prices up. They have yet to reach the giddy heights of the Côte d'Azur, however, so if the Med is the place for you then this could well be a good place to start looking. It is still possible to find a small village house to renovate for a really low price, but they are in limited supply!
