Maraussan’s picturesque location
The village of Maraussan, in the Languedoc region of southern France, has a stunning location between the rivers and forests of the Haut-Languedoc National Park and the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. To this heady blend of scenery you can also add the immaculate and extensive vineyards of the largest wine producing region in France, with their serried ranks of vines visibly changing with the seasons. All in all, Maraussan is a delightful village in a perfect location!

Small but perfectly formed
The village of Maraussan could accurately be described as small, but perfectly formed. With a population of just 2,782, it can hardly be said to be a city, but Maraussan is able to provide excellent facilities for its inhabitants. There are a good variety of the small shops that are essential in any French village... the boulangeries, the boucheries, the patisseries and a post office... and a small supermarket as well. Just outside the town you can also find a couple of larger supermarkets, so all your everyday needs are close at hand.

Beautiful beaches close to Maraussan
Just fifteen minutes away from Maraussan are the lovely sandy beaches of the French Mediterranean. The nearest beach, which has golden sands and excellent facilities for children, is Valras Plage. Here there are various sports available, including swimming, sailing and tennis, and the seafront has a great selection of lively bars and restaurants for your enjoyment.

Haut-Languedoc National Park
If you head north from Maraussan you will find yourself in the Haut-Languedoc National Park. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with cool deep forests of pine and oak, rushing rivers and a more mountainous terrain altogether. The diversity of landscapes here is quite amazing, and there are fantastic opportunities for outdoor activities, with the adventure sports of white water rafting and rock climbing suited to this area.

Historic city of Béziers
The lovely and historic city of Béziers is close to Maraussan, and this is certainly worth a visit. Béziers has superb shopping facilities, modern areas and ancient parts... and a sad story to tell of its decimation during the persecution of the Cathars by the Catholic Church. Park your car in the underground car park in the city centre... it keeps it cool even in the heat of summer and means that parking is never the stressful experience it can be in many busy cities! Beziers has plenty of things to do, and there is even an eighteen-hole golf course on the edge of the city for relaxation after shopping and sight seeing.

Maraussan is a good base
Maraussan is also a good base for visiting Carcassonne or Montpellier. Even the Catalan capital of Barcelona is accessible in just a few hours.

How to get there
There are plenty of options when it comes to travelling to Maraussan. You can take a flight to the nearby airports of Carcassonne, Montpellier, Perpignan, Toulouse or Nîmes, and there is a new air link expected this year (2007) to the airport at Béziers. Carcassonne, Montpellier, Perpignan and Nîmes are all served by Ryanair. Montpellier is also served by British Airways and GB Airways and Perpignan also served by bmibaby and flybe. Toulouse is served by bmibaby, British Airways, easyJet, flybe and bmi. The train is another possibility, as both Montpellier and Toulouse have a TGV stop, from where you can take a local train to Béziers itself.

Property prices and availability in and around Maraussan
Property prices in and close to Maraussan in the Hérault are in the middle price bracket for this southern part of France... that is to say they are cheaper than the Côte-d'Azur, and better value for money than Provence, but more expensive than properties in the Aude and the Ariège. The Hérault is becoming very popular and this is hardly surprising given the beauty of the natural environment, the proximity to the Med and the fabulous climate. Characterful village houses are popular here, with some of considerable and often surprising size, but it is hard to find gardens attached unless you move out of town a little. The town makes a great place to invest in property for holiday letting, as rental returns tend to be good and the town is popular with holiday makers.
