Margon – a circulade village with a chateau!
The village of Margon, which is found in the central south of France in the Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon, is a lovely and very old circulade village, set amidst the fertile vineyards of Mediterranean France, and overlooked by one of the most beautiful and most authentic chateaux in the region.
|
Picturesque and peaceful
Margon, with its population of less than 300 inhabitants, is a picturesque and peaceful village, where life proceeds slowly, and where work is dictated by the seasons and the changing needs of the vines. The little narrow streets of the circular shaped village bear testimony to centuries long past, the mellow stones of the houses having soaked up generations of southern sunshine. Margon has more than just its history and beauty to offer though, as the community is thriving and forward looking, with a school, some village shops and a bar/restaurant. Perfect for that relaxing life in the south of France.

What to see and do in Margon
Margon has an interesting little church, and the superb Château de Margon. The chateau is now an hotel and offers great accommodation as well as gourmet food. The village is only small, so there isn't a lot in the way of entertainment facilities, but at certain times of year you will find the sleepy tone of life picks up rather suddenly as the village goes "en fete".
|
Out and about
Nearby you could visit the slightly larger village of Roujan, which has a few more amenities, or go to the town of Pezenas, which is not only lively and well equipped, but beautiful and full of mediaeval character. A little more driving will take you to Béziers and Carcassonne, and even Spain and Andorra are within reach. Or you could head south-east and you will soon find yourself in the legendary French Riviera.
|
Sports and the great outdoors
The entire region offers boundless possibilities for sportsmen and women, with fabulous hills for walking, cycling and horse-riding. Then there are the Cévennes Mountains in the background, where you can do the adventure sports of caving, canyoning and white water rafting, and of course the Mediterranean Sea just a short drive away, where you can spend long lazy days sunbathing, sailing, swimming and enjoying all the fun of the seaside. The vineyards and wine domains offer a different sort of activity too, so take the time to taste and test, to learn and to enjoy the delicious wines of the Languedoc.

How to get there
The airports of Béziers and Montpellier are very near Margon, but it is also easy to reach from Carcassonne, Nîmes or Perpignan. Béziers is served by Ryanair; Montpellier by easyJet and Ryanair; Carcassonne by Ryanair; Nîmes by Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair and flybe. You could also choose to travel by train as there is a TGV stop at Montpellier, and drivers will find they can reach the village from the D15 after following the A75 or the N9.

Property prices and availability in and around Margon
The price of property in the Hérault is never cheap, but it still bears comparison with many other parts of the south of the country, being more reasonable than the south of the Atlantic coast, and certainly cheaper than Provence, many of whose other characteristics it shares.
