Mèze – a town on the Bay of Oysters
The town of Mèze lies on the Mediterranean coast of southern France, on the inland sea of the Bassin de Thau. Attractive and lively, Mèze is popular with tourists but is also a great place to live. It is renowned for its seafood, as the Bassin is a rich source of oysters and other shellfish. The town is also host to a number of colourful festivals in the summer season.

Mèze occupies a unique setting
Decked in bright warm Mediterranean colours and with a seemingly never ending supply of sunshine, Mèze is a very attractive place to be and occupies a unique setting on the Bassin de Thau. The Bassin, an inland sea or salt water lake, separated from the Mediterranean by a thin strip of land, is a fascinating stretch of water that is home to a diverse and often rare flora and fauna.

Around town
Mèze has a lot to offer, with plenty of bars, cafés, restaurants and shops. The town itself is appealing, with narrow streets to explore in the old town and a pretty harbour. The Chateau de Girard is also worth visiting, as is the Chapel of Penitents and the Churches of St Jean de la Garrigue and St Hilaire.

Mèze offers all amenities
Mèze is a good sized town, with plenty of modern facilities such as banks, doctors, schools, hairdressers, supermarkets etc. There is also a traditional French market twice weekly, and in the summer season there are also arts and craft fairs and night markets, which add to the general ambience!

Dining out
If dining al fresco on fresh seafood is something that appeals to you, then you cannot afford to miss the experiences offered by Mèze in the summer time. Most of the restaurants have outdoor eating facilities, all around the shores of the Bassin, and the seafood is simply the best, as Tina Turner might have said had she tasted it. You know how fresh it is, because you see it being brought in from the waters every day… and you also know how clean the waters are because there is a centre for maintaining the ecological purity of the Bassin right here in Mèze.

Out and about
There are lots of interesting and beautiful places to see within easy reach of Mèze. Sète, often called the jewel of the Mediterranean, is situated just on the sea side of the Bassin, and the Cathar cities of Béziers and Carcassonne are a stone's throw away. There are many lovely mediaeval towns and villages to discover, and you can follow the wine trail and visit the different vineyards that proliferate in the area.

Sports on offer
Sports fans can access all manner of water sports locally, and there is access to tennis, walking, cycling, horse-riding and many more activities in and close to Mèze.

How to get there
There are several airports near Mèze which have direct flights from the UK. These include Montpellier, Toulouse, Carcassonne and Perpignan. Montpellier is served by GB Airways and Ryanair; Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi and Jet2; Carcassonne by Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. Rail travel is another possibility, as you can take the Eurostar from England to Paris, then change to a TGV and travel in comfort to Montpellier or Toulouse.

Property prices and availability in and around Mèze
Mediterranean property is almost always pricier than inland property... but the prices here in Mèze are still low in comparison with the Riviera, just a little to the east. So if you dream of a property close to the Med, but lack the necessary funds for Nice or St Tropez, take a look at what Mèze has to offer. You could be pleasantly surprised. Currently on the market are a good selection of lower priced properties, including renovation projects, a pocket sized studio apartment and characterful village houses with great views of the Bassin. At the top end of the financial spectrum Mèze offers you a chance to purchase a gorgeous luxury villa with swimming pool and a location to make the Beckhams jealous!
