For buying and selling property in Neffiès
The wine village of Neffiès, set amid the vineyards of the Hérault department in the central south of France, is small, but perfectly formed in the shape of a circle, with its streets and houses encircling the lovely Gothic church. Such villages, of which there are many in this region, are known as "circulades". They were constructed to withstand attacks from the invaders who came all too frequently from Spain and from other parts of France in mediaeval times.
Neffiès is full of southern charm, tranquil yet welcoming, and benefits further from its glorious setting in beautiful countryside within little more than a stone's throw of the Mediterranean Sea. With just less than 700 residents, there's not a lot to Neffiès, but the village has a few very pleasant shops and basic services to help make life sweet. There's a handy little supermarket, a tabac presse, a post office, the essential boulangerie for fresh bread and delicious pastries, a hairdressers, a friendly bar/café and a great selection of wine caves and vineyards around the village where you can sample and buy the best of the local product.
Neffiès is also known for its love of parties, and the village hosts a number of fêtes, often in the open air which provide a vibrant introduction to the traditions and spirit of this wonderful part of France.
From a starting point at Neffiès, there is so much to see and do that you will never be bored. The pretty neighbouring villages of Roujan and Caux are a pleasant diversion en route to visit cities such as Béziers or Montpellier, while the delightful mediaeval market town of Pezenas is worth a good few hours of your time. The surrounding countryside of vineyards and woodlands is perfect for walking, horse-riding and cycling, but if you are feeling the call of the sea it is only a short drive to the buzzing resorts or quiet fishing villages of the Mediterranean.
Here you can take your choice from the sophistication of resorts such as Cap d'Agde, with designer shopping, nudist beaches, nightclubs and a party lifestyle, or the authentic tranquillity of the lovely fishing villages on the shores of the etangs, the unusual and fascinating inland salt lagoons that typify the coastline of the Languedoc. The region also offers many sports, with golf courses, scuba diving, sailing, rock climbing, white water rafting and even skiing in the mountains in winter.
The nearest airport offering direct flights to and from the UK is Béziers, but you could also choose to arrive at Montpellier, Carcassonne or Nîmes, should it suit you better. All are served by Ryanair, with Montpellier also being served by easyJet. These cities also have train stations, allowing you to make the journey by train if that is your preferred form of transport. If you are driving, which is recommended as many of the places of interest are difficult to access without a car, you can find the village quite close to the A75 auto route on the D15 road.
If you have heard that the south of France is prohibitively expensive, think again. Property in Provence, and to some extent in the coastal Languedoc-Roussillon, can be pricey, but turn your thoughts inland just a short distance to villages such as Neffiès and you can find all of the charm and much lower prices.
