Olargues - one of the beautiful ones...
The village of Olargues, which is found in the central south of France, in the Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon, is classified as one of France's most beautiful villages. As soon as you set eyes on Olargues, you will see why it has gained this accolade. An ancient hillside village, standing on a bend of the pretty River Jaur, Olargues is built of mellow sun-baked stone, with charming winding streets and the beauty of the Haute-Languedoc Nature Park laid out at its feet. The so called "Devil's Bridge", an 11th century three-arched bridge of local stone that crosses the river, adds colour and legend to the already heady mix. In terms of beauty, character and charm, Olargues has it all.
|
Small but perfectly formed...
Olargues may be small, with a population of only just over 500 permanent residents, but the village is perfect in every way. It offers all the usual shops that are so important to life in a French village, with two boulangeries, a boucherie and other small useful shops.
|
Plentiful outdoor activities
Add to this the extensive outdoor activities that are offered here, such as walking, cycling, river swimming, fishing, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, canyoning and many more, and you will see that size really is not the issue here! The bounty of nature is everywhere, and there is so much more to keep you occupied in and around Olargues than the man made pleasures of a town could ever offer.
|
Wining and dining
Olargues is not exactly a big city, so although it does have a few good restaurants, for variety of choice for evenings out you will need a car to explore the region and all the gastronomic pleasures it has to offer. Your efforts will be repaid, however, as this part of France is proud of both its culinary traditions and its wines, and there are many excellent establishments where you may sample both, and where you will find you are made very welcome.
|
Out and about
Olargues is situated in such a beautiful and historic part of France that there is an endless choice of places to visit. Even the Mediterranean Sea is within easy reach of the village. Locally, there are vineyards to visit, olive groves and many lovely villages and hamlets. There are Cathar castles to discover, and more history than you can shake a stick at, with Roman, pre-historic and mediaeval traces all over the area.
