The village of Pouzolles which lies in central southern France, a short drive inland from the Mediterranean Sea, is a delightful old wine village that oozes history from its very stones. The village lies amid the neat rows of vines that are so important to the area, and the landscape also includes the backdrop of rolling hills and that distinctively aromatic Mediterranean scrub land known as "garrigue".
Pouzolles is dominated by its impressive two-turreted chateau and church, which adds a fairytale dimension to the atmosphere of the village. Its truly southern French character is further enhanced by the local bar, very much the place to go to catch up on the local gossip, and the boules court where the red hot sporting action of the summer takes place under the shade of the huge plane trees that line the park.
Wine is currently very clearly the raison d'etre of the village, as it is of many others in the Hérault. But although wine has been produced here for many of years, it is likely that the prime source of the economy was once oil. The name Pouzolles means "oil well", and traces have been found that suggest that the site was once an oil field.
It's just a village... there are basic shops and facilities, but with larger towns such as Pézenas, Béziers and Magalas close to hand offering supermarkets and all other necessary services, it isn't really a problem. As you might expect, the provision of wine is exceptionally good, with no less than four wine caves in the village where you can taste and purchase all the locally produced specialities.
The Hérault is a great department for those who love to be outdoors and active, and there is a huge variety of sports and leisure activities on offer near Pouzolles. The Med, with the lively resort of Cap d'Agde, is less than half an hour away by car, with all of the associated facilities. Without leaving the Hérault you can find golf courses, spas, horse-riding centres, cycle hire, white water sports and other adventure sports such as acrobranche, zip wire and canyoning. The less sporty can take time out to visit the cities of Béziers and Montpellier, do a little wine tasting and generally just soak up the sunshine.
Reaching Pouzolles from the UK is simple, as there is an airport served by Ryanair at nearby Béziers and also Montpellier (which is also served by easyJet). You can also easily access the village from Nîmes, Carcassonne, Perpignan or Toulouse. Nîmes is served by Ryanair; Carcassonne by Ryanair; Perpignan by Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe; and Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe. Train travel is a good choice, with the TGV taking you to Toulouse, then a local service connecting you to Magalas or Béziers. Drivers will find the village from the D13.
The area around Pouzolles is popular, and character villages such as this are highly sought after, especially by the British who have a long-standing love affair with southern France. It's not all bad news, however, as although Pouzolles property is more expensive than property in areas that are not so blessed with sunshine, scenery and, lets face it, wine, the village still offers chances to purchase lovely houses near the Med without paying the inflated prices of the Riviera or inland Provence. Pouzolles offers possibilities ranging from old stone village houses ripe for renovation to luxury modern villas on the outskirts of the village.
