Servian - an ancient Languedocian wine village

The wine village of Servian lies amid the vineyards that have been the main source of its income for centuries. Just a short drive away from the beaches of the Mediterranean, Servian is ideally placed for enjoyment of this beautiful and diverse land, with history and culture oozing from every stone. The streets of the village are quaint and twisting, with the old stone and shuttered houses banked alongside, casting a welcome shade from the strong summer sunshine.

Village life

Servian is a good sized village, and offers plenty of shops and services making it a sociable and welcoming place to spend some time. The main square, the Place du Marché or market place, offers all the usual local shops with bakers, butchers, grocers, chemists and a tabac as well as a bar restaurant. More bars and restaurants can be found tucked away in the old streets, and there are many more in the neighbouring towns and countryside. There is a weekly market held in the streets in the traditional style, and a visit to this is both fun and a great way to purchase your fresh produce and local specialities. The village does have a supermarket too, for those days when convenience is more appealing than tradition.

Things to see and do

As Servian is a wine village it makes sense to buy your wines either direct from the vineyards or from the wine caves of which there are several in the village. The region used to be known for producing many cheap and cheery table wines rather than the finer varieties, but in recent times techniques and quality have improved considerably and there are many excellent wines produced here now.

Servian history

The town has a history dating back to Roman times, and it was also attacked and defeated by Simon de Montfort in the crusades against the Cathars. Servian has an historic church as well as many lovely ancient buildings.

Around the region

As well as being bound up with wine, the region is notable for its connections to the Cathars, whose religious views were considered a heresy by the Catholic church. Many towns and villages around Servian bear the scars of the persecutions that followed. The cities of Béziers and Carcassonne are fascinating to discover, both also being well supplied with shops and restaurants and other entertainment. Meanwhile the Mediterranean Sea is only about a twenty-minute drive away.

Sports on offer

The region offers many opportunities to take part in various sports, with cycling, riding and walking being some of the most popular ways to enjoy the beautiful landscapes. There are golf courses and tennis courts easily accessible, and swimming pools and even lakes for cooling off in hot weather.

How to get there

Getting to this part of France from the UK is simple, and possibly about to become even simpler, as the local town of Béziers is rumoured to be about to offer flights to and from the UK with Ryanair. Other accessible airports include Carcassonne, Toulouse, Montpellier and Perpignan. Carcassonne is served by Ryanair; Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe; Montpellier by easyJet and Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. There is a train station at Béziers which links to the excellent TGV network, so you can travel all the way from England by rail with just a couple of changes. If you are driving, the village is easily found as it lies not far from the N9 auto route.

Property prices and availability in and around Servian

The Hérault is a mid-priced department, perhaps more expensive than some in the Languedoc but definitely cheaper than neighbouring Provence. Servian is a popular village and thus holiday rentals are a distinct possibility, with rental values being excellent.
