Villefort is La France Profond
If you like to lose yourself in La France Profond, away from all the stresses and problems of a busy city life, then you really should seek out the market town of Villefort in the little known department of the Lozère, in southern France. Situated at the foot of Mont Lozère, in the Cèvennes Mountains and National Park, the town is supremely well placed for those who love outdoor sports, be they the dramatic (canyoning, rock climbing) or the tranquil (fishing, walking).

All needs met in Villefort
Built in the local granite stone, Villefort is an attractive town which provides for all basic needs... and a few more besides! There are all the usual small shops, including those French essentials of a boulangerie (for that fresh baguette and croissants every morning), boucherie and charcuterie (fresh and cured meats), La Poste, green grocers and general stores for everyday supplies, and cafés, pizzerias and a hotel with an excellent restaurant. The town's weekly market takes place on a Thursday morning, so don't forget to set your alarm for an early start... it’s the only way to beat the locals to all the best of the fresh produce and other wonderful goods on sale!

Things to see and do in Villefort
Things to do in Villefort include taking a look at the church, with its façades from the 14th century and the 15th century, the town's intricate coat of arms, an ancient washhouse, and the St Jean Bridge. The town's best claim to fame, however, is the amazing 137 hectare lake that lies just beside the town. Here you can swim, sunbathe on the beaches, fish (there is a big, well stocked trout farm), and simply marvel at the scenery. The hills sweep up dramatically from the lake, and the dam which holds the water is a marvel of engineering that is simply awe inspiring.

Outdoor sports
Lovers of the great outdoors will find that Villefort and the surrounding area is a paradise. Completely unspoiled, and really quite wild in parts, the countryside takes in the Cèvennes Mountains, which offer snow sports in the winter season, including Alpine and cross country skiing and dog sledding. They also make a fantastic adventure playground in summer with possibilities for canyoning, rafting, fishing, climbing, horse-riding and hill walking. Villefort has a nine-hole golf course too, so addicted golfers can get their fix without having to travel!
