Heart of the Languedoc
The philosopher John Locke visited Montpellier in the 17th century and concluded, ‘I find it much better to go twice to Montpellier than once to the other world’. Montpellier is the stunning capital of the Languedoc Roussillon and has a population of just under 230,000. The city has an acclaimed 13th century University with a world renowned medical department, which once upon a time taught a young man named Nostradamus.

Embracing change
Montpellier spent the great majority of its history relaxing under the sun with a slow pace of life. This changed abruptly in the 1960’s with the mass immigration of French families from North Africa. This caused a boom in the local economy. Not long after this, a radical left wing local government took office and began bringing in sweeping reforms to the city. The Old City was pedestrianised, a large housing project began and high-tech industries from far and wide settled in the city. As a result, Montpellier today is one of France’s most affluent cities and has a public transport system that outclasses those elsewhere.

A city of style
The centre of Montpellier is packed with picturesque fountains and open squares. Stylish buildings sit alongside historical ones in this ever growing city. The lively heart of the city, nicknamed ‘l’Oeuf’ due to its curiously shaped roundabout, is centred around the Place de la Comedie. A visit to the Opera House is a must - the building is an exact copy of the one in Paris.

How do I get there?
The TGV train service makes a stop in Montpellier, which means that Paris is only 4 hours away. The city also has its own international airport, which means travel to and from the UK couldn’t be easier. RyanAir, GB Airways and British Airways all have regular flights into the city. The roads that lead out to the surrounding Languedoc Roussillon are well looked after and easy to navigate.

What are property prices like?
Montpellier is the most expensive city in the Languedoc Roussillon. Due to the city’s fluctuating economy and the increasing interest in owning properties here there has been a 25% rise in prices over the last five years. It would be hard to find a villa needing renovation in Montpellier, although the surrounding villages may still have some more affordable properties.
