Lots to do in Canet en Roussillon
Canet en Roussillon is a resort that is completely at ease with its identity as a popular holiday spot, and effortlessly provides all the facilities and entertainments that are required to maintain its position as one of the best resorts in the region. The town has a host of cultural events, and these are frequently connected to its Catalan heritage, so expect an exotically Spanish flair and flavour! There are some perhaps surprisingly sophisticated shops and restaurants, excellent local wines to try and buy, bars, nightclubs and fun for all the family.

Winter in Canet en Roussillon is a much quieter affair
A word of warning though, for those who may be considering living permanently in Canet. Although there are still some shops, bars and restaurants open out of season, many do close after the end of October, so expect a general quietening down of life in the winter. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, many look forward to the peace and quiet after the frenetic pace of the summer season!

Sports town
Amongst its many attributes, Canet en Roussillon is known as a sports town... that is, it offers an almost bewildering array of different sporting opportunities, many connected with the sea and the mountains that so characterise this region of France. Here, or certainly nearby, in the appropriate seasons, you can scuba dive, water ski, paraglide, fly a kite (an altogether rather more sophisticated and exciting version of what you probably remember doing in childhood!), sail, windsurf, rock climb, go mountain biking, ski, snowboard, dog sled... and more!

Out and about
The geographical location of Canet presents you with some great possibilities for exploration of this part of France… and even of Catalan Spain. Barcelona is an hour or so down the road, and all the Costa Brava resorts too. Then you could choose to discover the beautiful mediaeval city of Carcassonne, immortalised recently in the best selling book "Labyrinth", go high up into the mountains, visit the lovely fishing villages that dot this part of the coastline, or take a trip around the vineyards and enjoy trying the many delicious wines that are produced here.

How to get there
Perpignan is the nearest airport, and there are flights from around the UK with Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. Girona and Carcassonne are also near enough to be useful, both being served by Ryanair. The TGV runs to Perpignan from Paris, which makes train travel simplicity itself, and you can even continue on down to enjoy a trip to the Spanish resort of Figures, or to the great city of Barcelona.
