Formiguères - small and friendly
The little ski town of Formiguères is found located in the stunning scenery of the French Pyrénées, in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon in the south of France. Formiguères has access to great skiing, with several larger resorts on the doorstep, and although it is a small town, especially when compared with some of the Alpine ski towns, it has a great atmosphere, a lively social life and good amenities.

Shops, bars and restaurants
Formiguères has a good selection of small shops, ski hire locations and plenty of bars (often with live music), cafés and restaurants. Sophisticated it isn't, but there is lots of fun to be had here without being lost in a crowd.

Pyrénéan adventure
The Pyrénées are less well known than the Alps, but that is no reason not to give this area a try if you are an aficionado of skiing or other mountain sports. Formiguères is a genuine adventure playground for lovers of the great outdoors, with several ski resorts within minutes of each other, as well as lakes for sailing, fishing and swimming, rocks for climbing, caves for exploring, zip wires strung between mountains for those with no fear of heights(!) and beautiful countryside where you can walk, mountain bike or enjoy a little pony trekking.

Summer as good as the winter in Formiguères
This is one of the good things about Formiguères, that the town does not fall asleep for the summer months. With so much on offer it continues to attract visitors who enjoy its green summer charms as much as its winter whites!

Beau Geste!
OK, well maybe you won't meet Beau himself, but you will almost certainly catch sight of some Legionnaires around Formiguères, as the French Foreign Legion has a mountain base in the town. The Legionnaires often run adventure holidays for young people, who stay in the Legion's chalets and get to experience mountain sports and gain fitness and first aid qualifications at the same time. Unlike the Legionnaires of old, perceived as "lawless desperadoes", the Legionnaires of today are smart, courteous in the extreme and very popular figures around town.

Out and about
Places to visit in the area include the tiny principality and tax haven of Andorra, perfect for a shopping day out. The Andorran ski resorts are superb too, and it is certainly worth the drive to experience this unique little country where wild horses roam the roads and the mountains tower above you wherever you are. Spain is nearby, and you will hear plenty of Spanish voices on the ski slopes at Formiguères and the neighbouring resorts.

How to get there
The nearest airport is Perpignan, and you can get direct flights to this airport from the UK with Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. Those who wish to travel from the UK by train can take Eurostar to Paris, then a TGV to Perpignan. To then access Formiguères by road you will need to take the N116 road which leads you through stunning scenery to the D118, along which you will find Formiguères.
