Les Angles - next door to Spain!
The mountain resort of Les Angles, in the French Pyrénées in the far south of France, lies right up close to the Spanish border. It is probably the biggest and most developed of all the eastern Pyrenean mountain resorts, with excellent skiing and leisure facilities as well as some stunning scenery and easy access to Spain and Andorra.
|
Great skiing in the Pyrénées!
Everyone knows about the great skiing on offer in the Alps, and quite a few people have discovered the lovely slopes of the western Pyrénées, but for those who are new to the delights of the eastern side of these mountains, Les Angles may well be a pleasant surprise. The resort itself has over 40 km of pisted runs, but it is also possible to get access to other resorts in the valley with a special pass, meaning that you have access to some really good and quite extensive skiing. (One of these is Formigueres, beloved of the French Foreign Legion.)
|
Skiing for all levels at Les Angles
Les Angles offers skiing for all levels, but is probably best for intermediate and beginners, with some delightful long green runs winding gently down the mountainside for those who aren't too confident yet! There are even high level bars and restaurants in attractive chalet style buildings at various levels on the mountain, so you can refuel and re-energise... or take a sip or two of Dutch courage if that is more your requirement before heading on down the slopes!
|
Shops and hire shops
Les Angles has a good selection of general shops as well as ski hire and sales shops, so there's no need to worry if you don't have all the necessary equipment. The village has an excellent doctor as well, so should you be unfortunate enough to fall ill or to sustain a minor injury on the slopes, you will be well cared for without having to go any further afield.
|
Lively and fun
Les Angles is no slouch when it comes to night-life either, with lively bars, restaurants and a nightclub. Although the nearby villages tend to be smaller than many of the Alpine equivalents, there is a varied social scene going on there too, with some pretty and atmospheric bars and restaurants in the neighbouring villages of Formigueres and Puyvalador.
|
Other sports, other seasons
If, by any chance, it isn't skiing or snowboarding that has brought you to Les Angles but rather a love of the mountains in summer, with their impossibly pure green beauty and clear air, Les Angles offers the opportunity to go horse-riding, mountain biking, climbing, hiking, caving and many other activities, either in or very near the resort itself.
|
How to get there
The nearest airport is Perpignan, and you can get direct flights to this airport from the UK with Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. Those who wish to travel from the UK by train can take Eurostar to Paris, then a TGV to Perpignan.

Property prices and availability in and around Les Angles
If you are seeking a ski property and you really can't afford the Alps (or don't want the queues that are such an integral part of Alpine skiing these days) then consider Les Angles. The town is pretty and lively, there is plenty of French character around to be enjoyed, and there is some truly spectacular scenery. The skiing is good enough for most, there are plenty of lifts and cable cars, good facilities and... hey, what are you waiting for? There is some affordable property on offer, and as the popularity of the Pyrénées increases, this should prove a worthwhile investment.
