A Mediterranean and Catalan ambience
The village of Millas is in the far south of France, in the old Roussillon region of the Languedoc-Roussillon. It is a village which clearly revels in its Catalan heritage and Mediterranean setting. Traditionally constructed stone houses wear their pretty pastel coloured shutters with quiet pride and sit, for most of the year, quietly blinking in the hot Roussillon sunshine.
|
Occasions not to be missed
A sleepy atmosphere usually prevails, but Millas wakes up on several notable occasions. One is the weekly framers market which brings life and colour to the village, as well as a great opportunity to buy the freshest and best of the excellent local produce. Another is the annual Féria, a festival of bullfighting and Catalan tradition, which is an occasion you simply can't ignore, whether you love it or hate it.
|
Small yet self-contained
Millas is only a small village and is certainly not the place to go if you are seeking nightclubs and a celebrity lifestyle, but it does have most necessary amenities, including a large supermarket, a pharmacy and a fair range of small shops. For your social life there are several bars and cafés where you can pass the time in time honoured French style, and if you enjoy dining out there are two excellent Catalan restaurants. These are highly recommended, and if you haven't eaten in a Catalan restaurant before you will certainly enjoy the experience.

Catalan cuisine
Catalan cuisine is quite different from that found in the rest of France, and often includes unusual but delicious combinations of seafood and meats, or meats with fruits. Try the chicken with cinnamon spiced figs… and to make sure you are hungry, help yourself to a local Rivesaltes aperitif first.
|
Out and about
Millas is very fortunate in its location, which truly offers you access to some of the most glorious landscapes in France, as well as to the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the dramatic peaks of the Pyrénées. Travelling around the area you can easily include a trip to Spain, either to the popular seaside resorts such as Figeres (home town of famous surrealist painter Salvador Dali), or to the Catalan capital of Barcelona. Maybe a tax free shopping day in Andorra is more your bag... or if you are the energetic type you could climb to the top of the massive Mount Canigou for some of the most breathtaking views in France.
|
A great place for adventure sports
The region is tailor made for lovers of white knuckle sports. Try canyoning through the gorges of the nearby Fenouillèdes, or rock climbing, caving and white water rafting... here anything is possible if you are brave enough! In the winter too, there is a wealth of possibilities to appeal to adrenaline junkies, with the excellent ski stations of Andorra and the French Pyrénées close at hand, offering skiing, snowboarding, dog sledding and other winter activities.
|
How to get there
Reaching Millas from the UK could not be simpler. The village lies just north-west of the major city of Perpignan, so you can fly, travel by TGV or drive with ease. The budget airlines Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe all fly into Perpignan, which also has a TGV station, so making your train journey that much quicker. If driving, the village of Millas lies close to the N116.
