Molitg les Bains - a small spa village
The town of Molitg les Bains (which is not as hard to pronounce as you might think, as the word Molitg is simply pronounced Molitch), is found in a stunning natural setting in the foothills of the Pyrénées, in the department of Pyrénées-Orientales in the south of France. A spa town, whose natural thermal waters are warm and sulphurous, Molitg is popular with those seeking treatments for medical conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, as well as those who simply want to enjoy a restorative retreat in a beautiful and peaceful part of France.

Glorious setting
Molitg benefits from a fabulous location, where the views are of the mountains and gorges of the beautiful Pyrénées. The village itself is extremely pretty too, with an unspoiled air and some characterful buildings such as the castle and the church. Some of the buildings feature marble designs, and the shade is provided by a very Mediterranean mix of palm trees and bay laurels. If you want peace and beauty along with your spa treatments, then this is the place to be.

Any amenities?
Often a southern village of this diminutive size will not be able to offer many amenities, but because of the tourism angle brought in by the spa, this is not the case with Molitg. With a four-star hotel and its excellent restaurant, the village is no slouch in the luxury stakes. The spa offers the last word in top of the range treatments, and if you do need more, then you don't have to travel far to access larger towns and cities such as Perpignan.
|
Out and about
Both Spain and Andorra are within reach of Molitg, so if you want to travel a little further afield or do some serious duty free shopping, then you have an ideal location from which to do it. Closer to home, though, are many other fine places to see and many activities to try. Discover the tragic history of the Cathar knights through the evidence of the ruined castles and popular mysteries, such as those you can explore at nearby Rennes les Bains.

Activities on offer
Or perhaps take your courage in your hands and experience the white knuckle thrill of shooting the rapids in a small canoe, or with your quaking friends on a rubber raft, through the awe-inspiring gorges that slash through the land near the village. Other activities are possible here too, with walking, rock climbing, swimming, fishing and even scuba diving on offer, as the coast is near as well.
|
How to get there
Perpignan is the nearest airport, and has flights from the UK with Ryanair, bmibaby and flybe. Girona and Carcassonne are also close at hand if the departure airports suit you better, both being served by Ryanair. The TGV runs to Perpignan from Paris. It is also possible to take the ferry to Santander or Bilbao, and drive across the south of France along the Pyrénées, which is a fascinating and beautiful drive. You will find the village from the N116 road.

Property prices and availability in and around Molitg les Bains
It's not the cheapest place in France, it's far too desirable for that, but prices are reasonable for the department and certainly cheaper than at the coast, which isn't far away. Stone village houses provide an affordable choice, and offer a genuine opportunity to own a typical Pyrénéan property.
