Magnac Bourg - apple village
The village of Magnac Bourg lies in the green and pleasant land of the Haute-Vienne, in the Limousin region of south-west central France, and is surrounded by apple orchards which provide a strong clue to the mainstay of the village's economy. Apple growing is the lifeblood of this little village, and is celebrated in October every year with a colourful apple festival, which includes some ancient varieties of apples that can only be purchased from specialist growers.
|
Attractive and tranquil
The village is attractive and tranquil, and rural and traditional in atmosphere, although it does manage to provide a good few of life's little necessities and even an occasional luxury!
|
Range of shops and services
For a fairly small village, Magnac Bourg provides pretty well for its residents and visitors, providing them with a good range of useful shops and services. It offers the usual French essentials of a boulangerie, boucherie, tabac-presse and so on, but it also has some bigger shops usually associated with larger towns. You can even find a "Weldom" DIY store, which is perfect for those who may be renovating a house! There is at least one bank, a garage, a petrol station, a post office and there is a good provision of health care too, including a vet to care for your furry friends.
|
Magnac Bourg's church and market
There is a 15th century church which is worth visiting, famous for its beautiful stained glass windows displaying images of saints and priests, and a market is also held here on the second Saturday of each month.

Life's little pleasures
Unlike in many small rural French villages, you don't need to travel far afield to access life's little pleasures if you live in Magnac Bourg. Small as it is, the village has two or three restaurants all of which are highly acclaimed by those in the know... try them all and make your own mind up. The cuisine of the Limousin is justifiably known throughout France, with beef, duck, dairy products, fruits and truffles all adding their delicious favours to the menu. Treat yourself.
|
Sports and leisure
The open countryside of the Limousin positively invites outdoor sports enthusiasts to come and do their thing... so why not? The quiet country lanes and woodland tracks are perfect for safe and delightful horse-riding, and cyclists and walkers will find themselves equally well catered for. You can also find great fishing in nearby lakes and rivers, and many other sports in the locality.
|
Out and about
Magnac Bourg is well placed for further exploration of the Limousin region, and it is not difficult to also explore the popular departments of the Charente to the west, and the beautiful Dordogne to the south-west. Towns in the Haute-Vienne worth discovering include Limoges and Bellac. The region is known for its porcelain, so don't miss the opportunity to see how it is made, and perhaps treat yourself or a friend to an original piece.
|
How to get there
You can fly to Limoges with Ryanair and flybe, and the new airport due to open at Brive la Gaillard may also provide another option. The TGV goes to Angoulême, making Magnac Bourg very easily accessible from the UK. If travelling by car you will find the village close to the A20 auto route.

Property prices and availability in and around Magnac Bourg
Magnac Bourg is a great place to invest in property, as prices have not yet gone to the heights that have been seen elsewhere in France. It is still possible to buy an excellent property here without having to break the bank, although the situation probably won't last long! There are lots of renovation projects on the market at the time of writing, and plenty of good property available at under or around 100,000 Euros.
