The diverse landscape of the Midi
This is the largest region of France and has a wide variety of countryside, from agricultural farmland to the snowy mountains of the Pyrenees. The Gers is made up of rolling hills and is home to many beautiful villages. The Haute-Pyrénées is largely mountainous (as the name suggests) and has many ski resorts. Landscapes in the Tarn and to the west are a mixture of hills and rocky gorges - perfect for hikers, canoeists and campers. The Tarn department has become very popular with British buyers and prices have increased as a result.

The Midi - A gourmet's paradise
The decline of agriculture in the southern areas of some of Midi-Pyrénées has resulted in areas of very reasonably priced property. Food highlights include cassoulet (a bean and meat stew/soup), and magret de canard (duck), foie gras (a very rich goose pate) and Roquefort cheese. Apart from these specialities the residents of the Midi-Pyrénées region reputedly enjoys the healthiest diet in the whole of France.

A pleasant temperature
The climate is extremely pleasant with the high temperatures of the summer often cooled by a pleasant gentle breeze. The mountainous areas are obviously considerably cooler and wetter.

Travelling to the region
The increase in the Midi-Pyrénées' popularity is in part due to the much improved transport links. Budget airlines now fly to Toulouse and Rodez in the region as well as to Carcassonne and Montpellier across the border in Languedoc-Roussillon. The new A20 motorway has also improved access to the region for those driving down from the north.

Properties: availability and affordability
Foreign interest in the property market in the Midi-Pyrénées is steadily increasing as nearby Languedoc-Roussillon's property market gradually becomes saturated and buyers extend their search further inland. The Gers is the most expensive department in the region but reasonably priced properties can still be found here, particularly away from the capital, Auch. The Hautes-Pyrénées offers numerous renovation projects in the form of old farm buildings as well as ready-made ski chalets. However, the Aveyron and the Tarn are the departments harbouring the real bargains.
