Amidst the sunflowers of Gascony; a town as pretty as its name
The lovely market town of Fleurance, in the Gers department of south-west France, is set in idyllic countryside and offers a unique chance to fulfil the classic French dream. The little town offers a unique slice of authentic French life, with its multiple markets and impressive arched and canopied market square, whilst all around it are the artists’ delights of sunflower-filled fields and distinctive farmsteads of the Gers.

Sun-filled summers and the best food in France… allegedly!
There are many places in France which lay claim to a truly wonderful gastronomy, but it is rare to find any claim stronger than that of the Gers. The traditional local cuisine of duck and goose products laced with lashings of garlic is hard to beat, especially served up as it is here with long hot summers and unspoiled landscapes. Add a glass of Armagnac to wash it down, and you have recipe for a lifestyle which is about as close to the French dream as you can get.
|
Fleurance’s shops and restaurants
The town of Fleurance has the shops and restaurants for you to get the best from this famous gastronomy, so whether you want to cook the food yourself or relax and let someone else do the work, you can enjoy eating Fleurance style.
|
Imposing market square
In the centre of the town is the imposing heart of Fleurance; the market square. This has a canopied market area supported by massive stone columns, and in each of the four corners of the square stands a fountain-statue, representing the four seasons. This gives a truly atmospheric setting for the markets, which in turn reflect the changing seasons in the produce which graces the stalls.
|
Church of St-Laurent
The Church of St-Laurent is classified as historical monument, and is well worth a visit if you enjoy the splendour and sense of times past inherent in such old buildings.
|
Out and about
If you are looking to get out and about from the town, you could consider a visit to Saint-Clar for either the garlic market or to try some watersports on the beautiful lake. Jazz lovers could time a visit to coincide with the jazz festival at nearby Marciac, and golfers will find themselves well catered for with Fleurance’s pretty nine-hole course. There is also some superb horse-riding and walking available locally.
|
How to get there
The airport of Toulouse is not far away, so there is a good choice of airlines (British Airways, bmibaby, easyJet, flybe and bmi) and departure airports for direct flights from the UK. The train is another option open to you, as there is also a TGV station at Toulouse. Those travelling by road can take the A62, leaving at the exit for the town of Auch.

Property prices and availability in and around Fleurance
Property in Fleurance can represent a real bargain, as although the Gers is becoming more and more expensive, it has not yet caught up with other areas of the south of France. There are some very beautiful character properties available in or near to the town.
