The town of Plaisance, in the rural department of the Gers in south-west France, is a lovely town in a tranquil setting. Perfect for a relaxing lifestyle, a home or holiday home, Plaisance will also suit those who enjoy the robust and delicious gastronomy of the region, not to mention the Armagnac! Plaisance is attractively constructed around a central square, and has the added attraction of a riverside setting, as the pretty River Adour skirts the town.
Plaisance is a bastide town, typical of its genre, and as such makes a very attractive sight. Full of history, the town never the less offers all mod cons, with shops, supermarkets and a lively social scene of cafés, bars and restaurants to enjoy. There are also more prosaic facilities, and the town has doctors, dentists, schools and a post office to answer these. Don’t miss the Thursday morning market in the Place de l’Eglise, which is a heady blend of sights, sounds and scents which add up to a mix which is typically French… and Gascon!
The Gers, despite being France’s least populated department, has one of the country’s most highly regarded gastronomies. The flavours and textures are robust and rich, with favourites being Foie Gras, cochon noire and duck confits. In and around the town there are a good many excellent restaurants where you can sample the cuisine, not forgetting that all important glass of locally produced Armagnac after the meal!
Plaisance is well placed for being a base from which you can explore several different areas. The Atlantic coast and the ritzy surfing resort of Biarritz are very accessible, or you could head south to the mountains and the ski resorts of the Pyrénées. Spain is close enough for a day trip, and nearer to home there are the fascinating towns of Condom, Tarbes and Nogaro. The last even has a motor racing circuit, so lovers of life in the fast lane can get their thrills even in rural southern France! There are many other sports available to try locally too, and the beautiful countryside is perfect for horse-riding, walking and cycling.
To reach Plaisance from the UK you have a few options. The town is fortunate in that it has reasonably good access to Toulouse (British Airways, bmibaby, easyJet, flybe and bmi), Pau (Ryanair) and Biarritz (Ryanair), making flying to any of these airports a possibility. Rail travel is another option with both Toulouse and Biarritz having TGV stops.
Plaisance, despite being in a region which has recently experienced a considerable upsurge in the property market, still offers some well priced property. As long as you are prepared to look carefully and move quickly when you find somewhere suitable. Predominantly rural, the area has some lovely farms and barns ripe for conversion, as well as some attractive town houses within Plaisance itself.
