Simorre – a pretty mediaeval village
The little village of Simorre in the south-west of France in the department of the Gers, is a little gem of a mediaeval village. Set amidst the unspoiled peaceful rural landscapes of the ancient region of Gascony, this is a place for lovers of tranquillity and of all that is best about traditional France, to take to their hearts.

Half-timbered houses
This sleepy little village comes straight from the lid of a chocolate box, with its half-timbered old houses and lovely surroundings. It's only small, with just about 700 inhabitants, but there is a real sense of community here, as well as a few shops and services to help ease life along. Simorre offers a couple of bakers, so you can enjoy the wonderful smell and taste of fresh bread and croissants in the mornings, a grocer's shop, newsagents, and even a restaurant for those occasions when you want to treat yourself and let someone else do the cooking.

Schools and services
This little village does have a school, but just for the younger children. The older ones will have to take the free bus to the nearby towns, just fifteen or twenty minutes distant. The buses are excellent, though, and it's actually a good way for the kids to meet new friends. The village has a few registered craftsmen, but the nearby large town of Auch will provide anything that you can't find in Simorre.

Out and about
This is the historic region of Gascony, and there is a still a strong sense of identity here, with traditions adhered to and the gastronomy, in particular, revered. If you are dining out, and you should, as the region supports some of the finest restaurants around, look out for local specialities such as duck and goose dishes, Foie Gras, truffles and cepes.

Places to visit
Places to see include the town of Auch and the city of Toulouse. It is also possible to get to the ski resorts of the Pyrénées in around one and half hours, and here in winter or in summer you can find lots of sporting activities to keep you busy. Remember too, that the Mediterranean Sea is only around two hours away, and the Atlantic Ocean just a little further afield!
|
How to get there
Fly to Toulouse with a good choice of airline and departure points from around the UK. Toulouse is served by British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe. Train travel is another possibility, with TGV links from Paris to Toulouse. From here you can take a local train to Auch or Gimont, which are the nearest towns with railway stations. If travelling by road you will find the village from the N21 on the D12.

Property prices and availability in and around Simorre
Simorre and its near neighbours benefit in several ways from being relatively undiscovered by the property market, with unspoiled countryside and a peaceful atmosphere. This isn't all that is good about it though... the prices of the properties here are lower than in most parts of the south, with some lovely places coming onto the market at very affordable prices.
