Bagnères de Luchon - stylish and fun
The town of Bagnères de Luchon may be an old established French spa town, but don't allow this description to limit your expectations. Bagnères de Luchon, or Luchon as it is more simply referred to, is a far cry from the faded glamour of many spa towns which seem to belong to another age altogether and offer little appeal for the modern tourist. Luchon has a truly lively and cosmopolitan feeling and a vibrant heart which embraces many adventure sports as well as offering traditional spa treatments and historical buildings.

Café society
The centre of Luchon is a little slice of Paris, with street cafés, brasseries and bars all full of enticing aromas of coffee, wine and food, and lively, chattering people. Luchon is well equipped with shops, and you can buy pretty much anything you need in the town itself. Culture vultures and history buffs can visit the museum and the old bath houses, although it is true to say that there isn't as much of historical interest here as, for example, in nearby and similarly titled Bagnères de Bigorre.

Spa or ski or perhaps something else?
Luchon offers you the chance to enjoy a great days skiing at the nearby ski station of Superbagnères, accessed by cable car for total ease of travel (no driving up twisty mountain roads for once!), followed by the ultimate indulgence of a relaxing spa treatment to unknot all those tired muscles and ease those aching joints. Life doesn't get much better than this, and especially in a place such as Luchon, that is surrounded by some of France's prettiest scenery. Other sports available in the area include para gliding, walking, golf, pony trekking and fishing.

Out and about
This lovely region is a treasure trove of places to visit, and you should really make time to spend a day or so in the capital city of Toulouse, where you will find beautiful buildings, excellent restaurants and theatres, cinemas, museums, art galleries and a multitude of other things to do and see. The mountain villages offer a glimpse of a gentler way of life, with pretty pastoral scenes and soaring snowy peaks making one of the most dramatic backdrops you could hope to find. With Spain, Andorra, the Atlantic and the Med all within reach, you will never be short of ideas for something to do from a base in Luchon.

How to get there
To reach Bagnères de Luchon you can fly to one of several airports that are within easy reach of the town. Pau and Biarritz have direct flights from the UK with budget airline Ryanair, while Toulouse offers a much greater choice of airports in the UK and airlines, including British Airways, flybe, bmi, Jet2 and easyJet. Rail travel is also possible and the TGV takes you to either Toulouse or to Tarbes. If you are driving, you can find the town along the D618/D125 after leaving the A64 auto route.

Bagnères de Luchon is a great place to find a property close to ski resorts even if your budget is on the tight side, as it is less expensive than the Alps and even less expensive than the better known Pyrénéan destinations. At the other end of the market you can find some truly delightful properties, with renovated farms and architect designed luxury new builds and conversions... all with unrivalled views of the Pyrénées!
