Boulogne sur Gesse - a small market town
Boulogne sur Gesse is situated in the department of Haute-Garonne in the Midi-Pyrénées. It lies close to the borders of Gers and Haute-Pyrenees at an altitude of 335 m, St. Gaudens being its closest town. Boulogne sur Gesse itself is quite a busy market town though small in size, with a population of just 1500. There are several rural villages and hamlets close by, all set amidst rolling countryside with lovely views of the Pyrénées.

Historic and vibrant
Boulogne sur Gesse dates back to the 13th century when it was founded by Cistercian Monks from Nizors Abbey. It is dominated by the 14th century Notre Dame Church of the Assumption with its beautiful frescos and murals, pulpit and bell-tower. Places to visit here include Nizors Abbey, which was built in the 12th Century and is now a private residence. The Serault Chapel, built in 1773 is also worth a visit. A bustling weekly market is held in the centre, and there is a good selection of shops and services available.

Things to do in Boulogne sur Gesse
Nearby Lake Boulogne offers an area in which to relax and take in the stunning surroundings. Here there is a picnic area, playground and swimming pool as well as cottages to rent. Pedaloes are available to hire and fishing, tennis and mini-golf are all on offer. The most prominent feature is however the viaduct with its eight arches, on which the Toulouse-Boulogne railway line was built. No longer in operation (last used in 1949) you can now hike along parts of the viaduct, enjoying the scenery along the way. Infact there are several walks to choose from in this area, including hiking through the undulating countryside around Bieil and Montoussé where birdwatching and butterfly-viewing is a must.

For the rather more adventurous
Canoeing, paragliding, horse-riding and hunting are further activities all available in the area, with skiing in the Pyrénées only an hour’s drive away.
|
Slighty further afield
You may like to visit Montmaurin’s museum and Roman ruins which were excavated in the 14th century and the 13th century Lespugue Castle and caves where bronze age human bones were found.

How to get to Boulogne sur Gesse
Boulogne sur Gesse is almost equidistant between Pau and Toulouse so you are spoilt for choice with Ryanair serving Pau, and bmibaby, British Airways, easyJet, flybe and bmi all serving Toulouse. Alternatively you could take the TGV into either Toulouse or Tarbes and drive from there, the latter option involving a longer train journey, but less driving. Should you prefer to go by ferry and car, then you could either sail to Brittany and drive down the west coast of France, or sail to Bilbao in Spain (P&O) and drive from there.

Property prices and availability in Boulogne sur Gesse
There are a number of property options available in the area, including land for building, village houses, traditional rural farmhouses as well as beautifully restored properties. Those bargain properties ripe for restoration are becoming rarer and more expensive, but can still be found. Prices seem to be slowing slightly in the region, Boulogne sur Gesse being relatively small and not as central nor as well known as other towns in Midi-Pyrénées.
