Cazères – a pretty bastide town

Cazères (or Cazeres) is a pretty bastide town which lies in the south-west of France on the Garonne River. Typical of bastides, Cazères is built in an organised fashion around a central square which serves as a market place and as the heart of town affairs, as well as a place for gossip, relaxation and occasional celebrations.

Surrounded by lovely countryside

The countryside of the Haute-Garonne is said to be some of the loveliest in France, having views of the majestic Pyrénées in parts and of the lush green river valleys in others. In July, the fields are full of golden sunflowers, or Tournesol, as they are known in France, and it is a never ending source of fascination to watch them turn their lovely heads to follow the sun as the day goes on.

Cazères’s distinctive church and houses

The church in Cazères is interesting and distinctive. It is built from the local small bricks, as are many buildings in the town, but it has two unusual octagonal towers and some lovely arches at the back that render it really worth a visit. There are, in fact, many architecturally interesting houses in Cazères, and the best way to discover them is to choose a sunny day (don't worry, there are usually lots!) and take a slow walk through the town, taking in the riverbank with its delightful vistas (especially the view from the bridge!) as you go. Refresh yourself at lunchtime in one of the town's many good cafés, bars or restaurants, and you will be ready for anything in the afternoon.

Cazères is superb for shopping

If you enjoy shopping then don't forget to pack your shopping basket, for there are plenty of opportunities to indulge in your passion in Cazères. Not only does the town have three supermarkets, and a great selection of smaller shops to tempt you, but there are also excellent markets held on Saturdays and Sundays.

Saturday and Sunday markets

The Saturday market is said to be one of the best in the region, and draws both shoppers and stallholders from far and wide, whereas the Sunday market is a traditional flea market, beloved of collectors and browsers everywhere! Cazères also offers most services required for a comfortable modern lifestyle, yet manages to retain a peaceful and very typically French ambience.

Sportsman's paradise

The Haute-Garonne is a real paradise for sportsman, as there are so many different sports suggested by the diverse landscapes in the department. The Pyrénées call you to climb, walk, mountain bike and, in winter, ski or snow board, while the waters of the Garonne suggest fishing, boating and cycling. The countryside has lots of other opportunities, with horse-riding and golf being especially popular. Cazères itself has tennis courts, a swimming pool, water sports and bowling.

How to get there

It is easy to reach Cazères as the town lies near the Toulouse airport at Blagnac, where there are direct flights from the UK every day. Airlines that serve this airport include easyJet, flybe, bmi, bmibaby and British Airways. Toulouse, just 60 kilometres away, also has the advantage of a TGV station, so you can travel by rail and change at Toulouse for local services.

Property prices and availability in and around Cazères

Property in the Haute-Garonne has recently experienced some very significant price rises, and it is still growing in popularity. Unsurprisingly, Toulouse is the most expensive place to purchase property, while towns like Cazères tend to offer more house for your Euros, while still retaining many of the advantages of the region, such as the good climate, lovely countryside and fabulous gastronomy.
