Beaumont de Lomagne - town with a turbulent past
Beaumont de Lomagne is a lovely bastide town situated in the Tarn-et-Garonne department of south-west France. Built in the 12th century, the town suffered badly in the Hundred Years War and then lost many of its citizens to the Plague. The 17th century proved no better, when the town once more suffered attack by both war and plague. Despite all this misfortune, however, Beaumont remains a traditional and interesting bastide, with many of its important structures still intact, including the church, the fortress, the covered market place and the fifteen mansions for which the town is so well known.

Practically perfect in every way
If you want to see a practically perfect example of a bastide town, then Beaumont de Lomagne is one to see. It is constructed along the classic lines of a bastide, with grid patterned streets radiating out from the central square with an imposing covered market, a fortified church and a pervading sense of history.
|
Amenities on offer
There's more to see than just the lovely old buildings, though, as Beaumont has a famous son, the mathematician Pierre Fermat, whose life and work is celebrated in his home town with a permanent exhibition. Beaumont has good shopping facilities too, with all the usual services (banks, post office, petrol stations, supermarket, butchers, bakers etc.) available. It also offers all kinds of sporting activities, including tennis, football and gymnastics.

Wining and dining
The local wines are really worth investigating. Beaumont de Lomagne is reported to have one of the best wine merchants in the region, so make the most of it! The little town boasts plenty of very good restaurants too, with opportunities to try the rich and delicious cuisine that makes the south-west of France such a special place to be. Put the diet on hold... here you will find fabulous pork, duck and goose dishes, truffles and cepes, nuts and haricot beans, all laced with lashings of strong white garlic of course. Just enjoy!
|
An aromatic festival
Although it is a celebrated and historical bastide, Beaumont de Lomagne is most famed for its garlic, that wonderfully pungent member of the onion family that has epitomised France and French cuisine for centuries. This town, the epicentre of the garlic industry, hosts a festival every July to celebrate its acclaimed product.

Out and about
Beaumont de Lomagne has a big leisure lake, and this provides an opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities, including swimming and fishing. The region also offers lovely walking, cycling and horse-riding trails, and golfers will be pleased to hear that they can indulge in their favourite sport here too, with two very good courses nearby. Fans of excitement may like to go to the Hippodrome, which hosts some of France's most important trotting races. If you haven't attended one of these events before don't be fooled by the word "trotting"... these horses are really moving! There are many interesting places to visit too, with the great city of Toulouse nearby, and the Med and the mountains all within driving distance.
|
How to get there
The international airport at Toulouse offers many choices of airlines and flights from various departure points in the UK, and is easily accessible from Beaumont de Lomagne. Currently Toulouse is served by British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe. Rodez and Bergerac are also within reach, Rodez being served by Ryanair and Bergerac by Ryanair and flybe. The TGV provides another option for those who prefer to travel by rail, with a stop at Agen and Toulouse. Travellers on the road will find the town near the A62 auto route, on the D928.

Beaumont de Lomagne has some quality properties on the market at very reasonable prices at the time of writing. Property types vary in this area, with modern villas and old farmhouses and "maison de maitres" side by side on the agents' books.
