Béthune – a phoenix town
The town of Béthune is found in northern France in the Pas-de-Calais department. It is a town that was almost entirely destroyed during the terrible world wars, but which has risen, with northern French tenacity, Phoenix like from its own ashes and regenerated itself into a lively, attractive and successful centre of industry and commerce. Famed for its Belfry, Béthune is also notable for its large selection of exclusive, luxury shops.
|
Béthune’s eclectic architecture
The town has an eclectic mix of architectural styles, due to the loss of many original buildings during the wars, and the subsequent rebuilding which took place over a period of time. This actually adds to the appeal of the town rather than detracting, and in the main square you can enjoy a range of architecture from the 14th century Belfry, built in local grey sandstone, to the elegant red brick Flemish houses and even some flamboyant Art Deco!
|
Luxury shopping
Béthune is a great destination for shoppers, especially those who are seeking something a little out of the ordinary, and who like to shop at the top end of the luxury scale. (First to spot Victoria Beckham wins a prize!) The town has designer clothes boutiques, gourmet delicatessens, and luxurious and exclusive interior design shops... but there are supermarkets too if your budget doesn't quite run to designer everything!
|
Don't forget your skis!
Yes, that wasn't an error. Béthune has a dry ski slope nearby, developed from an old slag heap from the days of heavy coal mining. Skiing fans, you don't have to make that long and tiresome journey to the Alps or the Pyrénées after all... it is possible to ski in northern France! Just hop onto a ferry or onto Eurostar and you will be on the slopes in no time at all. Of course, Béthune has other sporting activities too, and you can find many of those more traditionally associated with the region such as fishing, horse-riding, walking and cycling all close to the town.
|
How to get there
Being in the north of France and close to the ferry port of Calais, means that it will always be easy to reach Béthune from the UK. Lille is also not far away, and this allows you the option of taking the Eurostar train which is another excellent way to travel. The TGV then takes you to Béthune.

Property prices and availability in and around Béthune
If you are looking for a bargain property in France, this could be a good place to start. Property in Nord-Pas-de-Calais is becoming more and more popular, but prices are still quite reasonable, and compare well to Normandy and Brittany and many areas of the south. Prices are predicted to rise in the near future, however, as a result of massive investment in the area by the French government.
