For buying and selling property in Clérac
The little village of Clérac, which is located in western France in the sunshine department of the Charente-Maritime, is a friendly place where the locals are keen to greet both visitors and newcomers to their pretty home. The countryside around Clérac is as pretty as the village itself, with the sunflowers and vineyards that are the lifeblood of this rural area all around.
Rather grandly for a village which boasts only about 400 inhabitants, Clérac has its very own castle, the Château de Clérac. Here, in a wonderfully atmospheric setting in 22 acres of woods and fields, you can sample and learn about French wines on specially arranged courses, or even take part in a murder mystery weekend if the fancy takes you! However you decide to view it, the chateau is a very beautiful example of this type of architecture, and has an interesting history.
The village is small but has a couple of useful shops and a very welcoming Auberge which serves excellent food and wines. It is deservedly popular, though, so book in advance to avoid disappointment. For other requirements try the nearby town of Montguyon, which has a twice-weekly market as well as plenty of shops and general services. If you are looking for something to do in Clérac, there is a good museum to visit as well as a pretty Roman church with some interesting period features.
For more physical activities there are sporting facilities near the village. There is a great leisure lake, the Beau Vallon, where you can swim or sunbathe. For golfers, there is a good course nearby, and the Atlantic coastal resort of Royan is near enough to guarantee great days out.
The airports of La Rochelle and Bordeaux both offer a choice of airlines and departure points from the UK, and have cheap flights with budget airlines. La Rochelle is served by Ryanair, flybe and easyJet, while Bordeaux is served by British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet. Those who prefer train travel can take the Eurostar to Paris, then change to a super fast TGV to Angoulême. There is a local station at nearby Bussac. Drivers will find the village near the N10.
The Charente-Maritime can be a fairly pricey place to buy property, but the most expensive areas are those on the coast. If you travel just a short way inland, to a village such as Clérac, there are often some excellent bargains to be found.
