For buying and selling property in Montguyon
The mediaeval village of Montguyon lies inland, in the southern hills of the Charente-Maritime department, in the west of France. With its ruined mediaeval castle and atmospheric historical “Old Town”, Montguyon attracts many visitors in the holiday season.
Montguyon hosts not one but two weekly markets, giving you a chance to purchase great local produce fresh from the farms on both Wednesday and Saturday mornings. In the warm summer months the town is also the location for some wonderful night markets. If you haven't attended one of these very “French” affairs before then don't miss this chance to do so, they are a terrific experience. The tantalising aromas of roasting chickens and herbs scent the air, and your appetite will be boosted even further by a tasting of aperitifs of the local beverages, pineau and cognac. You will find stalls selling lovely hand-crafted jewellery, paintings and even sculptures by local artists as well as foodstuffs and all manner of pretty glazed pots.
Montguyon has a good array of shops and amenities, and offers a supermarket too for all those essentials. There is a butchers, a bakers, a bank, a post office, a cinema and a petrol station... so life is pretty much taken care of without you even having to leave the village! There are some restaurants as well, offering the chance to sample local fare in pleasant surroundings, and even a pizza take away for those nights when you just want to slouch at home and not worry about the cooking.
The town also hosts an internationally renowned folklore festival, held at the end of July, and which is a colourful “must see” if you are in town at this time. The festival is held in the name of world peace, and invites many nationalities to take part and welcomes all. Enjoy outdoor performances with story telling and music, all taking place in atmospheric surroundings including parts of the ruined castle.
For more fun and games there are lots of facilities in or near to the village. There is a superb leisure lake, the Beau Vallon, where you can swim and sunbathe on the beaches to your heart's content. There is a good golf course nearby, with a zoo, a theme park and even the ocean at Royan, all on hand to keep you active and entertained.
There are three airports close to Montguyon, these being La Rochelle, Bordeaux and Bergerac. They all offer a choice of airlines and departure points from the UK, and have flights with budget airlines which keeps the travelling costs to a minimum. La Rochelle is served by Ryanair, flybe and easyJet; Bordeaux is served by British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet; and Bergerac is served by flybe, easyJet and Ryanair. Those who prefer train travel can take the Eurostar to Paris, then change to a super fast TGV to Angoulême or Bordeaux.
The Charente-Maritime is not France's cheapest department, being close to the wonderful and ever popular Atlantic coast, but property here can still be reasonably priced and prove to be a good investment. Look out for renovation properties, traditional Charentaise country houses and village houses. Don't forget also, that if you are seeking a no hassle holiday home, it can make sense to purchase a simple new build property, and Montguyon has some ideal easy living modern homes on the outskirts of town.
