St Aigulin, which lies in the south of the Charente-Maritime department, close to the Dordogne border, is a thriving and elegant town despite its relatively small size. Set on the beautiful River Dronne, which has successfully formed a strong defensive barrier around the town for centuries, St Aigulin also enjoys the glorious backdrop of the Forêt de Double, the Double Forest, where legend has it that many who fled from the wars that ravaged the country in the Middle Ages later took refuge here.

How to get there

If you wish to fly, the airports of Bordeaux and Bergerac are close enough to be very handy. Bordeaux is served by British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet, while Bergerac is served by Ryanair and flybe. Rail travellers will find the excellent TGV service will take them to Angoulême, Libourne or Bordeaux, and drivers should look for the N10 or E70/A89 and then the D730 which runs through the town.

Property around here is probably mid-priced when it is compared with the rest of the country. There are plenty of bargains around, especially if you are prepared to do a little renovation or updating work. Access: By air: Fly to Bergerac or to Bordeaux. By rail: Take the Eurostar to Paris then change to a TGV to Angoulême or to Bordeaux. By road: The town may be accessed from the N10 or A89/E70, and is located on the D730.


Economy: The economy is centred on industry and commerce, with a large tannery making saddles and other leather goods being of significance.


Interesting fact: Historically Saint Aigulin has been considered defensively strong thanks to the natural barrier formed by the rivers that surround the town, principally the River Dronne, said to be perhaps the most beautiful river in France.
