Saint Genis de Saintonge – an attractive small town
St Genis de Saintonge is an attractive little town that is found near the Atlantic coast in western France, in the department known as the Charente-Maritime. With its lovely floral displays the town has a well cared for atmosphere, and this makes it an appealing base for holiday makers looking to discover this region and to have easy access to the wonderful beaches that lie just a short drive to the west of the town.
|
Market day
Although St Genis has a selection of basic shops, including a boulangerie for those essential baguettes and croissants, the real appeal of shopping here in town is the Thursday market. A traditional French street market, full of all the colour and charm you could dream of, St Genis really comes to life on Thursday mornings when the stall holders transform its quiet streets into a wonderland of sights, sounds and scents. Treat yourself to anything from the latest fashion to freshly cooked hot couscous for lunch... and don't forget the local specialities of pineau, cognac, cheeses and superb fresh seafood.
|
Wining and dining
St Genis has some friendly and excellent bars and restaurants, so you don't even have to leave town to enjoy a night out... and a night off from the cooking! The region is proud of its food and drink, so take the chef's advice and experience the true bounty of the Charente-Maritime.

What to see and do in and near Saint Genis de Saintonge
While the town isn't really bursting with tourist attractions, there are a couple of things worth seeing and doing here. There is a pretty little Gothic-style church, which is worth a visit even if you are not really the church going type, as it adds a character and sense of history to St Genis. Then there is a very different attraction, which may well appeal to you if you have either kids or any aspirational racing drivers in tow. The town has a go-kart track that is not just for the little ones to play on, but a real track of competition standard.
|
Further afield
Don't limit your days out to the town or its very close neighbours, as there are many wonderful places to discover in this region. The coast is only a very short drive away, and the resorts of the Atlantic as well as the Gironde estuary towns are all within easy reach. Even the famous wine city of Bordeaux is close enough to visit in a day trip. A little closer to home is the Roman city of Saintes, and the fascinating town of Blaye with its impressive citadel and acres of pristine vineyards.
|
Sports and leisure
Of course the coast offers sea sports, and lovers of sailing, swimming and sunbathing will love the ease of access to the beaches of the Atlantic. This isn't all there is to do, however, as St Genis de Saintonge has its own ideas to suggest to you. The area is good for walkers and cyclists, and the Gironde estuary provides much interest to nature lovers. There are golf courses nearby, and of course, St Genis has the super go-kart track which is open to the public as well as being a competition track for exciting races.
|
How to get there
You can take a plane to La Rochelle or Bordeaux. La Rochelle is served by Ryanair, flybe and easyJet, while Bordeaux is served by British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet. Or you can take the Eurostar train from Waterloo, change at Paris and travel on to Bordeaux by TGV. Then there is the ferry, with the ferry port of St Malo being the nearest. It is around a five-hour drive down to the Charente Maritime, and driving is easy as the A10 auto route is usually smooth running and excellent and takes you almost directly to your destination.
