Saint Savinien has river, a castle and a market!

A picturesque town with a castle, a river and a traditional market, has to figure highly on anyone's wish list when looking for a place in France. If you add to this proximity to the Atlantic coast, a host of outdoor activities on hand and a treasure chest of history, heritage and culture, and you are describing Saint Savinien. This little town lies in glorious surroundings in the Charente-Maritime, and enjoys one of France's most enviable sunshine records!

Getting to know Saint Savinien

First impressions are pretty correct, when it comes to Saint Savinien. Everything about this small town is beautiful, from its riverside location to its impressive castle, its old stone houses and delightfully laid back way of life. Every day spent here is a pleasure. The town has a traditional French market, held on Saturday mornings, and this is the place to go for fresh produce and local delicacies. The town also offers a boulangerie and patisserie for those sweet treats that no one does as well as the French, a convenient supermarket and essential services like banks, post office and schools. For leisure and pleasure, Saint Savinien also comes up trumps. It has bars and restaurants, a mini port on a lake off the river, an outdoor swimming pool and crazy golf.

Heritage to explore

As you'd expect from its traditional appearance, Saint Savinien has plenty of heritage to discover. Things to add to your "to see" list include several churches, an abbey, a small heritage museum, the castle and many pretty old buildings and charming little alleyways and courtyards.

Enjoy boat trips, a round of golf or a host of other activities

Whatever it is that floats your boat about life in rural France, you'll find it within reach of Saint Savinien. Boating is, of course, on the agenda, thanks to the river and the boating lake in the town. You can also enjoy boat tips to and around the coast and its lovely islands. Other activities available locally include golf, on a choice of courses, walking, cycling (most of the countryside round the town is flat enough for even the less energetic to enjoy), tennis, swimming and horse-riding.

Visit the coast and mediaeval Saint Jean d'Angely

Days out may take you towards the coast, where you will find lively resorts, character towns and endless activities. A visit to the mediaeval town of Saint Jean d'Angely is highly recommended. Then of course there is the town of Cognac, famed for its brandy, the vibrant port of La Rochelle and the wine city of Bordeaux. The choice is all yours.

Property prices and availability in and around Saint Savinien

With its super climate and wealth of beauty, this is a sought after area. However, property can be more reasonable than in other popular areas of France, and this is especially true at the time of writing, when prices have not yet fully recovered from the recession. The area offers some superb properties that represent good value for money. Just compare them with similar places in the UK to see exactly how much you can get for your Pounds!
