For buying and selling property in Baignes Sainte Radegonde
Baignes Ste Radegonde is a very pretty market town that is located in the west of France, in the Charente department of Poitou-Charentes. Baignes is set in a landscape of vineyards and pastures, and of cornfields and sunflowers that turn the area bright gold in early summer. Once primarily concerned with wine production, an outbreak of the phylloxera wine virus forced the farmers to turn to the dairy industry and arable farming to boost the economy.
The market town or market village, which is perhaps a more accurate description of Baignes Ste Radegonde, due to its relatively small size and rural feel, is known locally as a farmers' favourite market, thanks in part to the new and very attractive covered market square. This is credited with bringing back lost trade and new suppliers to swell the ranks selling their produce on market days. Market days are not weekly, but currently on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
For a small rural village you will perhaps be pleasantly surprised to find that Baignes Ste Radegonde is able to offer all mod cons, including schools, doctors, shops, a supermarket and even a restaurant! Of course, if you want more choice when dining out you will need to visit a larger town, but of these there are plenty within easy reach, so there is no problem in making Baignes your base.
Baignes Ste Radegonde is set in such wonderful countryside that it is hardly surprising that the area is known as a walker's paradise. Cycling, fishing and horse-riding are popular too, and there are even golf courses within reach of the village, as well as tennis, football and gymnastics facilities within the village itself.
One of the local specialities is the fiery spirit, Cognac, and it really is a must try when you are in this area! The other drink locally produced is pineau, which is a blend of wine and Cognac, perfect as an aperitif on a warm summers evening. The town of Cognac is only around 40 kilometres away from Baignes, so a visit is definitely on the cards.
The airports of La Rochelle and Poitiers are easily accessed from Baignes Ste Radegonde. La Rochelle is served by Ryanair, flybe and easyJet, and Poitiers is served by Ryanair. Poitiers and Angoulême also have TGV stations for those who prefer train travel.
Baignes Ste Radegonde is not very well known to the average British property seeker, but it certainly deserves a little attention. There are some excellent value properties on the market at the time of writing, and as the area seems set to continue to increase in popularity, a purchase here could well prove a wise investment.
