For buying and selling property in Chabanais
Chabanais is an attractive old market town which lies on the River Vienne in the Charente department of Poitou-Charentes. The river, which flows through the town, gives a picturesque aspect, and Chabanais, while retaining a peaceful, rural feel, is also well equipped with most amenities. The town is within reach of the region's main cities and transport hubs of Angoulême, Poitiers and Limoges, and therefore simple to access from the UK. Its location also allows access to the popular attractions of the area, which offer plenty of great family activities as well as history, heritage and sports.
Chabanais has a great market, held on Thursdays, where all the local people gather to buy and sell fresh, local produce, crafts and other wares. The range of shops includes a supermarket, a post office, hairdresser, grocer, baker, butcher, pharmacy and even a British shop for all those products you miss from the old country! Services include doctors, dentists, schools, banking, a library, café, bar/tabac and a restaurant. There is also a swimming pool in the town to keep the kids occupied, in addition to tennis courts and a football stadium. The riverside is beautiful, and around the town there are some examples of traditional architecture to discover.
There is no shortage of things to see and do around Chabanais. Close to home there is the meteorite site and town of Rochechouart, two excellent leisure lakes for swimming, sunbathing and water sports, and rivers providing good fishing, but be sure to enquire about permits (usually available from local tabacs). Golf is also possible close to the town, with other sports on offer being horse-riding, walking, cycling, tennis and many more.
The cities of Poitiers and Limoges are well worth seeing, with historic quarters as well as cultural centres and superb shopping and dining. Nearby too, are some really good theme parks which are ideal for family days out. The Monkey Park (La Vallée des Singes) is delightful, offering the chance to see a huge variety of these fascinating animals in almost free and natural surroundings. Then there is the brilliant Futuroscope educational theme park at Poitiers, the Nautilus Aqua Centre and several adventure parks with facilities for all ages of children.
Airports which serve the area include Poitiers and Limoges, served by Flybe and Ryanair, and Ryanair respectively, and there are also TGV services running into those cities and to Angoulême. Chabanais has its own railway station, with good links to the TGV stops. The N141 major road and smaller D29 road run through the town, so drivers should find it easily.
Although the Charente is marginally more expensive than the other departments of the Poitou-Charentes, prices are still very reasonable, and there should be something on the market in or near to Chabanais to suit most pockets and tastes. In fact, the current market offers some amazing properties (some for under 160,000 Euros), so if Chabanais seems to fit the bill, now would be a good time to take a look.
