Charras - a village in the forests

Little Charras is not exactly well known to tourists. It's a pretty but unassuming village of less than 400 residents, and the overall atmosphere is exceptionally calm, rural and traditional. However, its setting, amid the beautiful and extensive forests that so characterise this region, marks it out as a special place. It's a perfect escape to the peace of La France Profonde. But, it's close to fascinating places and endless activities, so offers something for every member of the family.

Amenities available in the village

Charras is tiny. But, it offers some good basic amenities that mean on those days when you just want to be lazy and hang around home, you really don't need to go anywhere else to buy your bread, get your hair done or enjoy a glass of wine in a local café. There's even a little history and heritage to discover in the form of a chateau, a church and an ancient abbey. The immediate surroundings of Charras bring the opportunity to enjoy unspoiled nature in a typically French way. Walking in the cool forests is a simple but rewarding pleasure. Then there are rivers and lakes, providing fishing, swimming and canoeing fun.

Angoulême is not far away

For those times when you need to visit a supermarket, or are seeking a great choice of restaurants to sample the local fare, the lovely old town of Angoulême is only 25 kilometres away. Here you'll find not only supermarkets, but also colourful street markets, small shops and a huge variety of excellent eateries and bars.

Visit the Atlantic coast and discover Green Perigord

Charras benefits from a simply wonderful location, near the Charente/Dordogne border. A short car ride takes you into the stunning countryside of the Green Perigord, an area beloved of British people for many years. Or you can head west to the Atlantic coast, where bustling resorts like Royan and historic port towns such as La Rochelle await you.

Explore Charente's castles and beautiful villages

Closer to home you still have an overwhelming choice of places to go and things to do. The Charente has castles to explore, beautiful villages like Aubeterre to visit, quiet lanes and roads to cycle along and golf courses galore to try out. Poitiers has its acclaimed theme park of Futuroscope to tempt you into a day out, and it's not just for the kids! The city of Poitiers is full of heritage, while Limoges, the city of porcelain, is also well within reach.

How to get there

You have a good choice of airports in La Rochelle, Limoges, Bordeaux and Poitiers. Should you prefer rail travel, this too is possible, with TGV stations at Poitiers, Angoulême and Bordeaux. There are good onward local connections too. Should you prefer to drive, the town lies on the D104, between the N21 and the N10 motorways. The nearest major road is the D939.
