La Couronne - an old market town in a great area
La Couronne is an old market town that is located just to the south of Angoulême, in the Charente department of Poitou-Charentes in western France. Set in a region long beloved of the British (a love affair dating back to the days of Richard the Lionheart, no less!), La Couronne makes a great base for discovering the many delights available in this region. There is certainly no shortage of amenities or entertainment here as the Charente is one of the best equipped departments of France in these respects!

Super for supermarkets and shopping...
La Couronne is close to the large city of Angoulême, and therefore benefits from access to all that this principal city has to offer, but the town is also extremely well equipped in itself. The Auchan supermarket in the town is said to be one of the biggest and best in the region, and the prices represent excellent value too!

Brit attractions...
It is believed that British people (and Americans... as recent rumour has had it that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been chateau hunting here!) are attracted to La Couronne by the features that appeal especially to Anglicised tastes, such as the availability of burger restaurants and large chain-stores such as Decathlon and Carrefour. Although personally I think it has more to do with the excellent quality of life, the friendliness of the local people (and yes, there are some French among the inhabitants!) the superb location close to all the facilities of Angoulême, the fabulous Saturday market, the accessibility of the Atlantic coast, the deliciously intoxicating Cognac brandy... and... need I continue? Suffice to say there are a lot of reasons why La Couronne is appealing... and not just to the Brits!

Out and about
There is so much to do and see in this part of France that it would, perhaps, be easier to list the things that are not on offer! Angoulême is a great city with old ramparts and a lovely cathedral. Then there is Poitiers with its Futuroscope theme park, a monkey park and a "brandy town" to see. The superb Atlantic coast is on the doorstep, and then there is the soft rolling countryside with its picturesque display of sunflowers, vineyards, chestnut trees and more to enjoy. Whether your pleasure lies in painting the lovely landscapes, walking the pretty country trails or in more active pursuits such as cycling, tennis or horse-riding, there is sure to be something here for you.

How to get there
The airports of La Rochelle and Poitiers are within easy reach, with La Rochelle being served by Ryanair, flybe and easyJet, and Poitiers being served by Ryanair. Poitiers and Angoulême are also able to supply stations with TGV stops, making train travel another excellent option. If travelling by car you will find La Couronne from the N10.

Property prices and availability in and around La Couronne
Property in La Couronne can be excellent value for money, as although the area is popular with the foreign property market, prices have not yet hit the dizzy heights of certain other popular areas of France. There are some fantastic bargains on the market at the moment in or close to La Couronne, and even those with fewer than 150,000 Euros to spend may still find themselves spoiled for choice!
