La Rochefoucauld lies in the west of France, in the department of the Charente. It is a pretty riverside market town, situated on the banks of the Tardoire River. For those of you who enjoy the more contemporary pleasures of shopping and fine dining, La Rochefoucauld will not disappoint. The town itself has many excellent restaurants of diverse ethnic origin as well as the traditional French cuisine, and there is some superb shopping available at the Gond-Pontouvre shopping centre. Townsfolk and visitors may also enjoy the town’s bowling alley and cinema.
If you venture just a short distance from the town you can partake in a multitude of activities. Horse-riding, golf, tennis, fishing, swimming and walking are all highly recommended and easily accessed from La Rochefoucauld. For those with children it may also be worth visiting the Nautilus Centre at nearby Angoulême, which is a water park extraordinaire!
It is possible to fly to nearby airports Poitiers or Limoges from the UK with budget airline Ryanair. Rail travel is another practical option as there is a TGV line into the town of Angoulême, close to La Rochefoucauld.

The town of La Rochefoucauld is located in west France, lying in the east of the Charente department.

Access: By air: Fly to Poitiers or Limoges.By rail: Take a TGV fast train from Paris to Angoulême.
Economy: Traditionally the economy is based on agriculture. The fields around the town are planted with sunflowers, grapes (for cognac and pineau) and melons. There is a certain amount of tourism generated largely by the chateau.
Interesting fact: The town is the ancient seat of the Dukes of Rochefoucauld. There are still around 200 people in France who bear this name.
