Attractive market town
Mansle is a very attractive small market town which is located in western France, in the Charente department of the beautiful Poitou-Charentes region. Essentially an old agricultural community, Mansle is popular with tourists for its unspoiled charm and twice-weekly markets. Mansle lies close to the larger town of Angoulême, and holds a desirable position in the south of the region. This makes it ideal for those wishing to also enjoy the charms of the Dordogne, which lies to its south.

Sunflowers and melons!
The countryside around Mansle is extremely pretty. Gentle rolling fields are full of bright golden sunflowers for part of the year, this stunning scene having inspired artists and writers for centuries. Melons are also a popular crop close to Mansle, and you will notice many signs offering “Directe vente” of these delicious and succulent fruits.

Twice-weekly market
You will also, of course, find these and many other fresh fruit and vegetable products on sale on the stalls of the twice-weekly market. Every Tuesday and Friday morning the market traders set up their stalls in the town, and a vibrant scene comes to life before your eyes. Take a tip from the locals and get down there early to find the best of the goods on offer… the early bird really does catch the worm in this instance!

About town
The little town has a pretty good selection of shops, and there are two supermarkets for those big weekly shopping sprees. Mansle has some very good restaurants, so choose your favourite and make the most of the lovely cuisine of the Charente, not forgetting to include a glass of the locally produced Cognac or pineau. The town has a museum and an abbey to explore, but its real glory lies in its colourful parks and gardens, particularly the fuchsia gardens where you will find a riot of colour and scent in season.

Things to do...
The Charente offers plenty of sporting opportunities, so try your hand at cycling, horse-riding, fishing or perhaps boating on one of the many leisure lakes in the region. Walking too, is a huge pleasure here, as the gentle countryside and beautiful landscapes unfold as you pass through at a pace which allows you to take it all in. Mansle has an international festival of dance in July, and this is a wonderful experience if you are in town at this time. There are also other fêtes and events which vary from year to year, usually advertised on posters around the town from a week or two before the event.

Places to visit
Mansle also is a good base for visiting places such as the town of Angoulême, with its paper mills and museums, or the neighbouring department of the Dordogne, with its lovely rivers and pretty villages. To discover other places of interest in the vicinity, just ask at the town's tourist office, where they will be very welcoming and pleased to help.

How to get there
To reach Mansle from the UK you can choose to travel by air, by train or by boat and car. Airports within easy reach include Bordeaux (British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus or easyJet), Limoges (Ryanair, flybe) and Poitiers (Ryanair). For rail travel you can take a TGV from Paris to Angoulême. The ferry port of St Malo is around five hours drive from Mansle, and with the excellent auto routes system, driving in France is a real pleasure.

Property prices and availability in and around Mansle
The Charente is in general, a department in which property prices can still be reasonable, but it is becoming more and more popular with property seekers so prices are rising fast. The Dordogne, just to the south, is now known as an expensive area, so in comparison Mansle offers a good opportunity to purchase property before prices reach the levels seen in the Dordogne. Property in Mansle is considerably less expensive than that on offer in Angoulême.
