As locations go, it can hardly get more idyllic than this. The village of Verteuil sur Charente, which would be beautiful in any location thanks to its stunning chateau and picturesque old houses, is made even more delightful by its setting on the banks of the River Charente, from which the village and the department take their names. Verteuil sur Charente is also set amidst the typical Charantaise countryside of sunflowers and corn, and is within reach of all of the most popular attractions of this region.
Verteuil sur Charente is not a large village, but it does have some good everyday amenities. Shops include a boulangerie for those essential baguettes and croissants, a boucherie for your meat and charcuterie, a general shop, a tabac and a pharmacy. Lovers of the local, tasty cuisine will also be pleased to discover no less than three restaurants. Verteuil boasts a couple of friendly bars too, where you can relax and perhaps practice your French on the locals!
As the village is historic, it really is worth taking one of the guided tours to make sure you don't miss seeing anything of interest. The best known features are the fairytale chateau and the old water mill, but the 12th century church, the mediaeval convent and many of the village houses are equally fascinating. The riverside walks are also delightful, and boating is possible.
The Charente, and the region in which it lies, offer endless opportunities for getting out and about and taking part in a huge variety of activities. There is lovely, gentle countryside to explore by walking, cycling or on horseback, and the rivers, lakes and seaside (it is only around an hour's drive to the coast) offer chances to swim, sail, fish or just to relax. Places to visit locally include Poitiers, the regional capital; Cognac, the brandy town; La Rochelle, the colourful port town; and a number of lively seaside resorts. Markets are held every day in the surrounding towns and villages, and fetes and festivals are a regular and charming part of local life throughout the year.
You can fly with Ryanair to Poitiers or Limoges for a low cost and easy way to reach the area. Limoges is also served by Flybe. Poitiers has a TGV station too, which links to a local service to Ruffec. If you are driving, the village is found on the D26 road, not far from the N10 main road.
The village is a desirable location, so prices can be a little higher than in some of the neighbouring communes, but property can still be found to suit most budgets. With current (2011) prices starting at less than 65,000 Euros for a town house, it can't be so bad!
